Rumours of progs demise are vastly overrated :whip:
I have no idea what these guys are talking about. I was there at Sasha's set last weekend in New York. All I have to say is that you will not be disappointed when he plays in Toronto in July. If you liked his set in Beruit and the S/D Essential Mix set, you will flip. His set in New York was ing unreal. It was the best sasha set I ever heard him play. The place was crowded all the way to the end and Sasha looked like he was enjoying himself. He set sounded seemless and was a total journey. There was a trancey vibe to the stuff he played but it was deep, dark, and definitely prog.
All you sasha haters can bitch all you like. He played well. It looked like he did play recorded songs that he remixed and tweaked. He used exclusively CD's - no vinyl. He also looked sober. In fact, I never seen him cracked out to the point where he was screwing up - too bad for you haters.
I have high hopes he will rip it in Toronto. Luke Fair was also amazing. He opened beautifully.
Last weekend was insane down here. Deep Dish played the following day and they did not disappoint. This weekend is Paul Van Dyk at Central Park and then an after-party with Paul and Jerry Bonham. It felt like Toronto last weekend ;) |

If any of you actually follow Sasha's works you'd know that he hasn't spun progressive house for 11 years |
Agreed.
Digweed would lay the foundation (Bedrock), and Sasha would provide the party. |

I'll speak for Richard Raiban, since he's probably still weeping in a dark corner, as I've gathered from Karen's smoke signals off the roof of their building, that I can see all the way in Buffalo.
Sasha IS progressive house, and he'll continue to pioneer that genre for years to come. Yes, he has been spinning some popular trakcs as of late, but, as the first 3/4 of Involver shows, he's still running the show and taking it in new and exciting directions. |
:stongue:
i saw this on tribe a few days ago....
i tried replying yesterday but my pc was acting funny so i decided to play splinter cell...
this is rather shocking but i cant see him giving it up.....i wont believe it until i see it... |

a wise old man once said that everyone follows sasha, well with prog now going the way of the dodo, i wonder what the next flavour of the week is going to be. although prog has lasted like 3 strong years. so it definately had a good run.
i hope prog dies a horrible death |

I've said it before and I will say it again.
Sasha has been washed up for the last 3 or 4 years. People call it inovative but he is barely holding on. It's all of these die-hards that loved him so much in the past that won't let go to the fact that he is a washed up, junkie, who probably has no idea where he even is in life. I know I'm a little harsh but if you were to go see him live or have went and saw him live in past few years he has stunk the place out, bored people to death, or was the same as any other so-so DJ out there.
I love the Sasha followers that stick by him and won't let go but trust me you will have to some day when it becomes obvious that he has lost his aura in the world of electronic music. Inovaters to me are the James Zabiela's out there who are doing things out of the norm, mixing genres in their sets, scratching and being real party DJ's.
NOW, if Sasha were to go back to his roots when he was a legend, and start playing that dark trance he is known for in the late 90's then maybe he could revive my trust in him and I may think about going to see him when he is in town. Other than that, MEH = Sasha.
Let it go people........ |

Matt, I couldn't disagree with you more. I keep the faith with Sasha because he's always blown me away. Even on his sader days (re: KH 2003) he still embodies a certain energy that I have trouble finding with any other dj. (yes even Tiesto)
Even though his style of tracks has never been my personal favorite, I think his style of mixing is phenomenal. The man puts very very difficult tracks together after doing 4 hours of blow.
I find it ironic how you cite Zabiela as an innovator when it's been well documented that JZ ows his career (or rather birth of) to Sasha. Not only that but you claim JZ to be a "party dj" when he's often controversially put the crowd to sleep from onset. My personal and subjective opinion about JZ is that he all too often concentrates on the art rather than the fun in being the dj. I've seen him over 6 times and only once (opening for digweed) has he kept me interested.
While the very stage presense of Sasha has usually kept me mesmorized. (again even on his bad days)
After the 6 hour stormer Fabric set Sasha spun back in Feb a few of us got together at a house party to discuss the shock and awe we experienced that night. Regardless of your opinion, he is a legend and for that alone he deserves more respect than you have just given him now. End rant. |

Sasha played a limited intimate engagement here last night. I heard about it after I had come back from the Skinny Puppy concert - damn!

He looks pretty sober to me. I don't know how anyone could spin a decent set cracked out. Sasha and all the A-list dj's are professionals.
Hearing from friends, he did answer some questions I had. He does pre-mix his songs - tweaking and combining elements to form meta-songs. I was wondering how he could layer so many elements off of 2 DVD turntables. The end result was very enjoyable. There was a Dead Can Dance complexity to his sound last weekend. I agree with him, in the end it's only the sound that comes out of the speakers that matter. |

I know there are a couple of you that may take offense to my comments on Sasha, call it tough love I guess. As you stated John, he brings a level of excitment or"certain energy " as you put it and I can understand that. You are in a room with arguable one of the best DJ's in the world. That still says nothing about his ability to rock a room anymore. He does deserve respect, I just think people are still giving him a lot more than he deserves at this stage of the game. He could come out with a mediocore track or set and there would be the die-hards that thought it was amazing cause it was "Sasha", correct me if I am wrong???
Mind you John, I know how big of Sasha freak you are and I'm not going to let this drag on, this was my opinion and I know there are some others who think the same way. no hard feeling but I know everyone does not like my "wash up" of a favorite DJ Danny Howells. He can still bring it to the table is the difference.
As for James Z, it was the first name that came to my head, maybe not the best example. |
