People have suggested using four linesmen rather than two, but the problem would be when one flags for an offside and the other doesn't, what does the ref do?
Most of these suggestions involve regular interruptions which goes against the free-flowing nature of football. |

...Ice Hockey is said to be the closest to football but is let down by the fact it is only played in two dimensions which limits the variety of play, as well as the fact that ice is scarce in many parts of the world which will always make it exclusive. |
Hockey is definitely played in a three dimensional world. Passes are not just forward and back or side to side, they are also over peoples heads, off glass, off other people, etc. a shot on net is another example of the full dimensional capability. yes the ice is scarce...can wait for the nhl to open things up a bit ;) |

what would an extra referee do that 3 officials don't do already? Look for late tackles and cheap shots?
The rule changes to get keepers to put the ball back into play quickly are a good move. The only thing wrong with football now is the diving players and faked injuries. Nothing that can be done on the pitch, but I think that review panels needs to be setup and suspensions imposed on players who ruin games by these theatrics.
and the best bit about football is being able to play anywhere with minimal equipment and any number of players. Seeing kids in stinking heat in the remote parts of indonesia run home from school to start playing, or from the townships in Africa playing on a large patch of grass beside the motorway, old farts playing in sunday leagues and off to the pub afterwards. |

The puck does spend a lot of time off the ground but from what I've seen of the game it spends far more time pinging from left to right than going vertically up in the air, for example. Another thing I forgot to add that lets down ice hockey is the equipment needed to play. I could learn ice hockey if I wanted at a local ice rink but it'd be too expensive and I couldn't just do it whenever I wanted, I'd have to travel there, pay, get all my kit on etc. With football I just need a ball and a bit of space, the surface doesn't matter, and I can play with any number of people or by myself. So it's obviously going to appeal to me more. |

Yeah they should add some timeouts and 3 seconds in the key except 3 seconds in the penalty area for the attacking team. I also think once they stop dribbling, they cannot dribble again. Its about time outfield players are allowed to use their hands in open play.
Add these rules and it will be the greatest sport in the world...
actually it already is... |

one upon a time there was NO subs in footy, then it one was allowed, 3 is well enough.
football is followed more than "the world's biggest sporting event," which is the olympics, go figure ;)
however, i reakon there is a big feces stirring spoon at the head of this thread

I presume u all heard of Jimmy Hills idea i think it is..
Basically the captain of the team can at any moment in the game ask the referee to review a situation by asking for say the 5th referee to watch a replay. So basically if there was a crucial foul which should be punished, a dive which results in a penalty, ball which may or may not go over the line, handballs etc, the 5th referee i suppose could call the decision from video replays. He suggested that this can only be done twice by both sides in a game so there arent too many stops in the game. Think that was the jist anyway..
Not a bad idea i dont think cos it would possibly make the game more fair and if both teams got to have two calls in the game there wouldnt be too many stops. Also the captaincy role would be more important cos he would have to know when to make the call..
What u think? |

If u think football has turned stale and it wasnt as good as it used to be why do u want to bring in new stupid rules, why dont u just wanna change some rules back to the way they were?? Stop trying to make OUR sports AMERICAN!!!!!
Anyway football is good the way it is, only problem i have with it is that referees are too eager to blow their whistle.
At Euro 2004 some refs blew their whistle at the slightest of nudges and it was pathetic. Its a contact sport and dribblers and attackers know if they go down at the slightest nudge they have a good chance of getting the decision their way. |
