well here's the thing, i'm buying it so i can carry it with me throughout my 2 month trip thru europe. so i don't want something overly expensive or bulky that i might lose (theft being big and all).
PulseFusion thanks for the in-depth review, and everybody who has replied. keep em coming, the more info the better.
i'm leaning towards the nomad at this point but i'll definitely check em all out in singapore. 15 GB ipod sounds ok too.
damn technology, always blowing my budget :D |

iRiver n Nomad seem to be the best choice.
Don't get my Panasonic SV-SD50, looks funky ass but not the best for its sheer value.
Pro's
- plays mp3, wma n acc <-- i prefer to use that format since its alittle bit better sound quality than mp3.
- super lightweight - 50grams or sumthing n its small, about half the size of a mobile phone, sumtimes i even forget im carrying it.
- I got it for free.. saved $450 when it came out.. hehehe schweeetttt..
Con's
-Have to use sucky RealOne PLayer all the time to transfer to files as it uses SECURE MEDIA which needs to be encrypted for you not to share with frens, im like booo... oh wells..
- a little slow on the transfer cause of the the above Real One Player.
I would go with an iRiver or sumthing like that if you want something small n light, but those Nomad's seem to be a great alternative to Apple's creation. But the size hmm....
Might want to look into transfer methods and rates cause thats what lets my panasonic down. |

have you considered the new 1gig minidisc players? THey seem really good. I have the model before it, it holds baout 320mb and they are small and compact. Love em! and with 1gig it would be swoit.
I brought mine to europe took about 4 discs worth of tunes, but with the 1gig mondel u would prolly only need 1 or 2 discs. |

The 1 gig is using Sony's ATRAC algo. Everything has to be re-coded into that format, which means it's not really a MP3. ATRAC is gay.
Bass is on the money iRiver n Nomad seem to be the best choice (or of course, iPod)

If you want it to go to Europe then you will DEFINATELY want something you can fit 100's of songs on. Even with my 384 meg i usually get sick of the songs after about a week. Definately go the bigger size if its for europe.
Better still, why an Mp3 player? Why not get an MP3 cd player?! They fit like 70 songs on a cd and cost under $100. The battery life is usually pretty good as well. I am getting one before i go to Europe at the end of the year, just because it is the best value in terms on practicality and $$.
Don;t be a fool an jump on the MP3 Player bandwagon. |

stamper has a point here - you could just burn your collection to cd
an added benefit here is that you could easily listen to your music on any computer and many modern hifis/car radios |

i would probably opt this to be a more viable solution. especially since you're instilled with the fear of theft. cart around 20 cds and you have 14 gigs of tunes to go through. :) if you do, go the latest iRiver. sexy little things. :) |

cos cds suck, kinda defeats purpose, MOVING PARTS ARE BAD.
:p
iRiver i think are way to go.
I think CDs should be phased out. A higher definetion audio format, so say 80 mins on around size of a dvd (capacity) is the way to go.
Discs are a thing of the PASTTTTTTTTTTTTTTt.
They are annoying.
mp3s are sooo convenient and play on heaps of stuff now.
and if i want stinkin' quality, i'll buy it on vinyl. for now. |

cds are big and bulky physically (unless we're talking about those mini-cds that are almost as small as md's) and i'm backpacking so i don't have space to carry my cd book.
not a bad suggestion, and i did consider getting an mp3 cd player, but just can't do it on this trip.
maybe i'll look at the MD option, but they don't hold too much.
/jumps right back on the MP3 bandwagon. |

dude, how do you think a HD mp3 player(ie jukebox/ipod) works??? its just a harddrive like in your computer, and therefor, is full of moving parts. Only players which don't have moving parts are flash based ones. And as has been pointed out above, they can only take up to about 512mb.
I agree with the mp3-CD option, it is a bit of a hassle still having CD's, but they are SOOOO much cheaper...less worrying about theft and whatnot. Also a BIG thing to consider when travelling, is batteries!!!
mp3-CD's take AA's, which you can stock up on easily and cheaply, so even if your in some desert with no power points, you'll still be chillin to some sounds. Think...It's a BIG hassle to have to find a power point all the time to recharge, and they only last about 10hrs or so. ANOTHER thing, is that depending on where you travel, youll have to get plug adapters and whatnot, and maybe even those things which change the voltage (the supply in some countries is different to others).
You really have to think about the little things like that aswell.
BUT if you do decide to go with HD based, then put me a vote down for then Jukebox Zen xtra.... :)
ah, just noticed you ruling out mp3-CD :P oops, well i didn't write all that for nothing, so maybe someone else will find it useful :) |

My friend is currently selling his Sony MD player, its the top of the range one, hes had it for about 9 months, paid $800 for it, is selling for $300. :)
And if you get a MP3 CD Player, you will only really need to carry about 10 CD's around, isn't too bulky. CD players these days are very thin. |
