Will this kill the iPod:
Creative Labs Zen Touch

I suggest doing some research on the www.head-fi.org and www.hydrogenaudio.org forums to balance the pros and cons of the ones you've shortlisted.

Here is some good detailed research someone did on the iPod:

Here are his conclusions:

iPod conclusions
So, after all these experiments, what do I think of my iPod at the end?
First of all, the iPod is a great product that I really like. The experiments mentioned on this website have been carried out because of my curiousity, but at any other time I'm just enjoying music, and relaxing. Having about 300 to 400 of my CDs with me all the time is great.

The sound quality is not top-level, but is good enough, and probably quite impressive for people who are not used to high-end audio like me. There is some room for improvements (a bit shrill, lacking a bit of openess), but overall it's very satisfying (dynamic), and on par with other portable devices.

Combining the iPod with a good pair of headphones is a must!!! The original earbuds are just not good enough, as is common with about any headphone combined with a portable device.

The integration on an Apple with iTunes is fluent and good. I'm not sure about the integration of the iPod with a PC.

My final conclusion, I warmly recommend the iPod to any music lover who wants to have some portability. Especially when you own an Apple Macintosh, the iPod is THE portable player to go for.

that is such a rip off of the ipod its not funny !! i suppose competition is good to drive down the price of ipods.

i still love my one though, but i can see competitors nearby coming to eat them up !

I bought a 15gig iPod 'accidentally' recently.. how the f@#$ you ask? Well I was logged into eBay looking at it and my housemate was dickin around and pressed the "buy now" button which obviously won me the auction instantaneously.. upon thinking about it, and how cool such a little critter would be, I though f@#$ it!! - I'll take it!! Honestly haven't looked back!! They are innovators as opposed to imitators.

If you want portability get flash, if you want a jukebox get a nomad or ipod.

Cd's are convenient, and flash cards aren't that cheap, weight up your options.. thats all we can really say now..

My (admittedly late) 2 cents .. hard drive players are the way to go, unless you're going to be jogging, or have tiny pockets, or something like that.

I've had the Creative Zen for nearly 2 years (apparently I was the first person in Oz to get one :nervous: ), but the new Creative Muvo2 looks pretty sweet (about half the size of an Ipod and comes in 1.5 and 4 gig flavours). Ipods are popular, but there are a lot of doubts and issues with their batteries, plus I personally don't think their sound quality is as good as the Creative gear.

i think when i save some cash i'll eventually get one, it just seems so much better having so much more stuff to listen to, instead of coming to uni late because i had to decide what cd to listen to, i can take them all!
