Things to say to close minded trancehaters

Sooo, it happens fairly often, someone will say "I dont like trance cuz there are too many kids rolling at these parties" or, "robert miles-children is a song, trance sucks" and similar things. Does anyone have something the say in response? This happened to me today, I responded with:
| quote: |
m still thinking its kinda ignorant for one to say they don't like an entire genre of music no matter what it is. Not all trance sounds like madagagascar and cafe del mar, just like not all Dnb is Dillinja and POTD. I think many people worry too much about what sounds are "cool" to listen to, and being EDM lovers, none of us will admit that we are trying to be cool. People have put so many different labels on different sounds that its become way too confusing, and just picking only one of these labels to listen to will get a person bored very quickly. "trance" as I define it is any repeating sound that has a hypnotizing quality to it, something that you can get lost in, and causes dissociation in the listener, making them in some way unaware of their surroundings. When that happens, people tend to be less self concious and more likely to feel like dancing or having a good time. For me, this effect is achieved just as easily from listening to DJ Tiesto as from Sasha, Ozgur Can, Zabelia, and many others. Its very understandable that people aren't enraptured by supersaws and breakdown/buildups in the same way that I am, just like roaring growling obnoxious bass doesnt capture me quite as well as others, but that doesnt mean I love the trance genre and hate the DnB genre, it simply means I am more attracted to creative arrangements of midrange synth sounds moreso then I am lower ones. There are trance songs with rumbling bass, and there are DnB songs with sine waves and breakdowns, so it is stupid to hate an entire genre because of this.
And on to this malarchy about drugs:
Im not buying this "trance is dead because all the trancers were rolling" mess at all, what really happened is, It became a fad for people to listen to a certain set of songs while under the influence of whatever substance, just like Herb and raggae music. Drugs have NOTHING to do with any certain genre of music, it is the fans of said music that create the drug problem. So trance "died" because it became hard to find trance that was free of drugs, which is no fault of the music itself.
If everyone time after time doesn't have fun while listening to their prefered style of music, then they will change their preference. But there are some people who enjoy some musics so much that they will keep trying. Many people enjoy their trance so much that these, "where is all the trance" topics keep coming up, because they are tired of their surroundings encrouaging them to change what they like. So instead of just abandoning something you enjoy because the people surrounding it have made it less enjoyable, why not attempt to create an environment that surrounds your music in a more pleasant manner? It really can be done, and many of us will pay to see it happen.
Trance music is not, and will never become dead. It is just the people surrounding it.
So don't let other people control what kind of music you like, if we all stop paying attention to trends, drugs, and any other mess about the people that surround our music, then we will all start having more fun.

then the opposition replied:
| quote: |
I dunno man. Having done both (trance and drugs), Trance definately caters to people on drugs. I don't have a problem with it if everybody is over 18 and not advertising the fact that their rolling.
|
to which I replied:
| quote: |
How does a sound make you want to roll, other then lyric that say "hey u! take this pill!" ?Just because a certain sound seems more pleasurable while you are on drugs, doesnt mean that that sound was catered for people who use that drug. Trance has an engaging quality that when done right can make one feel as if they are on something, but that does not mean that people are supposed to take stuff while listening to it. I dont understand how people can say they don't like trance just because they saw some people act like asses while they were on drugs, its irrelevant to what to music sounds like.
I think hippies are stupid, but goa is still good music
People who pretend to be thugs and act liike they have a hard life generaly piss me off, but DnB is still fun to listen to
I don't smoke weed, and potheads make bad decisiions and arent fun to be around unless you are one, but Raggae music is still pleasing to my ears
Im tired of elitist people who have the idea stuck in their head that their way is the only way and the best way, but I enjoy the progressive sound just as much as they do
I am white, and I dont enjoy seeing a bunch of people who arent white making false generalizations about people who share the same color as me, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying the occasional hip hop song
Again, its not the music that is the problem, it is the people surrounding it!
we fix the people problems, we have more fun, the current problem is, people associate music with the people they see around it, and it causes them to judge the sounds the wrong way

I wouldnt even bother with it. People are ignorant. One of my sisters friends and I were talking. She asked what I listen to. I told her. Her response "So how much E do you do".. I didnt even bother trying to tell her otherwise. Hi.. yes.. I pop a pill everytime I get in my truck to go somewheres..
MY GF doesnt care for it. Yet I took her to see Tom Stephens and her response was "The music wasnt that bad, just dont tell anyone I said that"..
So I no longer have the conversations. Hell I even turn on the radio sometimes when I have passengers just so I dont have to deal with it. 21 days to WEMF. |

| I just play trance when I drive, passengers or not. If they don't like it, then I punch them in the face. That solves that dilemma, doesn't it? |

especially in the US and slowly more and more in europe, people are going to have these negative preconceived notions about electronic music as well as the people sourrounding it. The people from past generations are going to see some story on the news about a kid who died at a rave because he ODed on extasy or Acid or something and assume that EDM (which im assuming stands for "electronic dance music," not sure) is bad because it makes kids do drugs ect. My mom still thinks that if i go to a rave im going to be surrounded by people getting high and having happy E trips. In some cases its true but just like you said, you cant blame the music. If they do some mind/reality altering substance, they are going to hear the music in a whole new way, but that doesnt necissarily mean that EDM was made for the sole pupose of gettin lifted.
Now its a whole nother story for the people in my generation (i.e. HS and College students) A lot of people i know do drugs. In fact almost everyone i know does drugs. Mostly this is just weed but i know people who do anything and everything. I have yet to find more than a few people, myself included, who like trance and house, etc and still try and stay with the trends. I still listen to everything else thats on the radio which is usually hiphop but i dont like it anywhere near as much. When my friends are around me and im playing dance music, they usually dont care. some do, but in that case i just turn turn to some radio station that will play something we both like. They dont have the assumptions that if you listen to dance music you will just go out and do drugs. Most of them dont need it to do that. They just dont like it because they arent willing to conform to the non conforming things. They want to be as "in" as possible so they just listen to what anyone else listens to. Like i said i am one of only a handfull of people who listen to this music whether we are told its stupid or not.
A lot of people i know assume that only homosexual people listen to trance. I realise it is a big genre in the gay community but that doesnt mean you cant like it if you arent gay. Im not gay and i absolutely love trance. I have heard a lot of people ask if i was gay just because i have been getting out of my car with some PvD or ATB or Tiesto or whever playing.
Its basically those three things. I think what you said was completely right. If someone doesnt like your music and puts you down for it, screw em. Dont comform to the regulations put forth by society on music... unless you want to. |

"No."
"Neither does DJ Sammy."
Change song to fit genre of their choice. |

People say a lot of things. After many years of verbal war, I'm ready for some pieces of peace.
Something that messes with people's minds is this:
-where do they draw the line at for trance?
If they like Top 40, perhaps point out to them that more than a few modern radio songs happen to veer dangerously close to trance, not to mention the arpeggios and delay effects employed on the likes of a few modern rock records, and to an even greater degree, the sonic production techniques on pop influenced by trance. Take the beats away from some trance, and you might as well get some lush soundscape that applies to new age/chillout stuff (I know it's certainly the case with "Children").
There are many musical mongrels out there... and a classication net like "trance" is awfully large. I am cautious of such generalizations.
Perhaps leave the person with this possibility:
"You say you do not like trance, but someday, just maybe, you might hear a trance song that you DO like."
And smile and walk off ;) |
