Mate, despite of my Paulista ancestry, I lived in Rio.
In what sense can Rio be better?
1) São Paulo has the best food, and is culturally richer by far. You have Italian, Japanese, Korean, Arab,..., colonies all in a 5 km range, whereas in Rio us stricted to its glorious cultural past (of samba and bossa nova, back in the time it was the capital and the next couple of decades) and other egocentric views - in fact, the most inovative bossa nova now comes from São Paulo, along with the best producers, DJ's and football teams; the best rock music comes from Brasília since the 80's, not to mention our architecture is far more interesting; the best "Rio Funk" tunes either come from Niterói or from other states; the most famous "tropical music" comes from Bahia... not to mentiont that since São Paulo is the economic heart of our country, it attracts more immigrants than Rio, so there are even more people from the south and northeast there, making the culture even richer.
2) Rio de Janeiro is a landscape city. It's got beaches, Cristo Redentor... and nothing else, as people are too egocentric (despite of being friendly) as they all want to take advantages on everything (and brag). In São Paulo the landscape is more modern, with concrete and glass all over - and it's part of their mentality to work instead of trying to be malandros (as the cariocas are known for).
3) The accent from Rio is annoying.
...
Long story short, Rio is like a gorgeous bimbo who comes from a rich family but can't do much on her own, whereas São Paulo is that cult intelligent girl you met in high school. |
