All depends on where he's playing. His productions are definitely more on the housey tip recently though. |

I'm going to rephrase it and redo it probably as individuals. I just wanted to make sure my history according to the rest is mostly right.
Only reason the drug addiction was mentioned, it was the reason that hardy and levan are not alive today and the reason that most of you really don't know about them.
yes derrick may is in self imposed retirement for the most part, he is still mad about the critics slamming his stuff (tho his innovator album from 1997 was class but that was mostly old stuff), now if you believe what you read, he is still making music (rumors have it that he has over 500 tracks). All you have seen him do in the last decade is work with Steve Hillage and System 7 and the odd remix. Derrick May runs the Detroit Techno scene like the mob, he blackballed Blake Baxter for reasons that Blake is not sure of. Blake said in an interview that he was working with Kevin Saunderson and apparently Derrick phones kevin and says you cannot work with him. Kevin tells Blake and he wonders WTF, so Blake finds May in a club and asks him about it and May does not say anything (typical may, he is a chicken from what people say). So Blake left Detroit (lives in Chicago) and makes house music instead of techno. Blake still wants to kick May's ass...lol
Now about gays, if it was not for gay club kids and their club nights, music as we know it with house, techno and others would not be the same. It was a way for them to escape reality, they did not have do drugs (they drank LSD laced punch). Frankie Knuckles, Francois K, Francois Grasso, Nick Mancuso, Larry Levan, Ron Hardy (house founders) are all gay yet they made music that influenced detroit people who formed techno, which led to hardcore,trance and other genres (which eventually split off). So without gays, our music would not be the same, whether you like gay people or not is a null point. |

As I understand it he went into self-imposed exile becasue artist were taking his work and re-working it into commercial music, thrus making loads of money from it which May didn't like because he doesn't make music for the money. He then came back in 1993 with 'Icon' after four year away from the techno scene. |

1974 – Larry Levan starts his residency at the cont. baths with Frankie Knuckles as protégé playing disco to gay kids
1977 – Knuckles moves to Warehouse in Chicago (with Ron Hardy as protégé)
1977 – Levan moves to Paradise Garage club
1981 – First start of techno (well electro) of Juan Atkins and Rick Davis as Cybotron
1983 – Hardy moves to upscale Chi. Club called Musicbox
1983 – Knuckles moves to powerplant club
1983 – Chicago house explodes
1984 – Competition in Detroit between the Electrifiying Mojo and Jeff Mills Begins
1983 – Cybotron split
1984 – Derrick May influenced by Hardy starts to make music
1984-1985 – Techno genre coined by Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins (Belleville three)
1985 – Juan Atkins (techno godfather) releases Model 500 – NO UFO to massive acclaim
1987 – Derrick May starts Music Institute Club in Detroit
1987 – As Rhythim is Rhythim (May gets popular), more in the UK
1987 – Studio 54 Closes down (Larry Levan playing the last set)
1988 – Acid House hits the UK
1988 – Techno with May and co. hits the UK and Europe
1988 – Saunderson goes big with Inner City
1989 –Jeff Mills and Mad Mike Banks start to formulate Underground Resistance (UR)
1990 – Hardcore and Rave are big words in the UK
1991 – Levan dies of drugs, Hardy of the same |
