ranking of worlds top dj's

i was talking to one of my friends and i was going on about how all the worlds top dj's are comming to toronto and that we have had the top 3 so far and sasha(number 4) is comming this weekend.
my friend then asked me how they rank the dj's and what the criteria are, i couldnt answer coz i dont know.
i now ask the TA's how do they rate these DJ's to decide who is number 1. |

Speaking of taste.
Tiesto, PVD and Armin etc.. all have GOOD taste. If they didn't have good taste, they would never be in top 10, because popularity is directly proportional to the kind of music that DJ plays. Tiesto could have the ties skills ever, but it's because of his musical tastes that he has soo many fans. |

I am sorry dude, but those names are up there for a reason. Popularity plays a little part but i think thats just a excuse.
Why is tiesto #1? Because everyone likes his , hence they vote for him. Plain and simple, production, live sets and all that have a HUGE part to do with it |

where did i say that my tastes are better?
almost everyone i know my age didn't vote at all, older people tend to stray away from trance.
and considering that the total number of voters is about 50000, i give little importance to this chart...
britney spears is more popular than tiesto, is she better than him? :rolleyes: |

just cos he doesnt agree with the #1 dj being picked based on popularity stunts doesnt mean he thinks his taste is better than everyone else...
ever notice that over 3/4 of a tiesto set is Id-able?why??
A: cos he plays only whats popular.
thats how he becomes the "best dj" in the world. and riding along that title is what hes been doing for the past 2 years....all the flyers HAVE to state "tiesto #1 dj in the world". this brings in people hwo dont know bout the scene coming to the parties cos hes so hyped up, and then being the only dj theyve heard of or the first "trance" dj theyve heard of, they vote for him the next year..

Did you ever hear Tiesto - HMH 2003 set?? At the time many of those tracks were relatively unknown to most people. Now every track is being played by every decent trance DJ out there. |

meh...why bother defeding Tiesto. He's a great DJ. I don't think even he pretends that he's the most "skilled".
That he is very capable at giving people a memorable night of trance and that he has probably the largest fan base of any single DJ in the world is pretty hard to deny.
I respect skills...but if a DJ is technically brilliant, yet puts me to sleep at a club...what good is that? They can stick to producing good stuff *cough*deepdish*cough*
so what defines "Best" in Best DJ? For me, a DJ is a facilitator of sorts. They play an integral role, if not the biggest role, in whether or not I have a good time when I go to a club.
IMHO, what defines a good DJ is their track selection, putting together a fun and coherent set (the "joureny"), their mixing skills (no train wrecks please), their personality (are they having fun or do they look they hate doing what they're doing?), and crowd interaction (don't hunch over your f**king decks and not even look up once!).
So, Tiesto as "best" DJ under those criteria is at least a winable arguement. In terms of trance DJs, I'd definitely put both Armin and Ferry above him in every one of those categories though. |
