what I want to see, and it might happen, is OSX on the x86/itanium plateform...
that will bring hardware cost down and envigorate the userbase of the mac, attract more developpers... |
Wow, for once I agree with you!
Apple needs to embrace the PC with their operating systems, not compete with it. Admittedly the chances of many Windows developers porting their applications to OS X (or any other system) are pretty slim, because most Windows developers spend all their time on interface and don't have a f*cking clue about backend or modularity (much like Mac developers). Linux developers, however, are of an entirely different mindset and often write their apps to be cross-platform right from the beginning, since that's really what Linux and open-source development is all about (read: STANDARDS!).
Since OS X is already so closely tied to Linux, Apple could instantly gain a TON of software support simply by making their operating system available on hardware that also runs "generic" Linux. I'm sure they worry a lot about their hardware losing popularity as a result of this, but their business execs still don't seem to understand that the Mac's shaky software support hurts their business far more than a decline in hardware sales ever could. And they would still retain their edge in video editing and other creative departments because that software would still be available exclusively for the Mac OS, no matter what hardware is involved.
Again... my two cents. :p |

No other manufacturer has been able to squeeze as much juice into such a small package and make it look so damn beautiful in the process. Powerbooks rock. |

| You guys who think you need a Mac and Final Cut Pro for video editting - check out a PC and the Sony (Sonic Foundry) Vegas video editor. Half price and equal or better than FCP. |

I've been using a mac for over 6 years now and I find they have they've got their pros and cons. Right now, I've got a G4 Tower at home, a 30G iPod and I just got a brand new G5 Tower at work (I do graphic design). Overall, I think my opinion is biased because everything I do is on a mac, and I am soooooooo much more comfortable on a mac rather than a pc. If you're comfortable with pc's, its gonna take you a while to get used to how a mac works. Even though OSX is becoming more like a windows based system, and apple is trying to create greater compatibility between mac and pc users (hence the mac/pc compatible ipods), there are a lot of differences between the two and how they operate.
The #1 difference between mac and pc: crashes. Be prepared for lots of crashing with a mac - even my new G5 crashes every so often. Also, lot of software and websites are mac-friendly, and that can get really really frustrating. Remember, only 10% of all computer users use macs, so generally everything is windows-based.
My advice to you - if you're only getting a mac cause it looks snazzy and you just really want a mac - don't do it. If you're gonna use it for music/video/artistic purposes, then go for it. |

i just got a G4 tower this weekend and im loving it so far! it does what i need it to do and it looks good in the process.
i've been a pc user all my life but i loved the look and 'customizability' of OSX so i decided to switch.
