Rap/Hip Hop/ Trance THE DEBATE

I think the more important question :why is hip hop extremely popluar in the USA while trance and EDM are just as popular in Europe?

I persoanlly think there are some huge cultural diffenece between the two contintents which induce a preference for a type of music.
I think this is the most important converstation and worth introspection instead of trying to explain why one music form is superior to the other.

My thoughts are the following:

An extreme dictomy of the middle class in america between the upper middle class and lower middle class has created an acute form of tension and anger within the culuture. Thus a preference for one type of msuic than an other.

Many years of racism and segration have also contriubuted to a very unique culutre of "white" and "black" america. Thus a preference for one type of msuic than an other.

Culturally americans have a priority towards work and money while other cultures value family, free time, etc. ( of course you wll not agree persoanlly but studeies have shown that america as a whole behaves this way.)

Economically and Socailly america is vastly different. The great "white flight" of the early 70's out of inner cities, segration between neighboorhoods, and the development of large US conglomerates dominainating media, radio, fashion, etc. Thus a preference for one type of msuic than an other.

A few quick differnces in culture which expain the differnce in taste of music:

1)Europeans had a long tradition going back to the middle ages of creating and enjoying "melody" type music. Remeber where mozart and bach came from??? Guess what same region as where tiesto , armin, PVD are from too!! Thus it should be no suprise to see that many young europeans are embrassing "melody" type music (i.e. EDM)

2) Without the cultural and economical differences in the US hop hop could not flourish in Europe. Even though it has been accpeted and embrassed as a musical form.

3) EDM in its majority imo was made to enjoy. Listen to it while your on the beach, at a club, having a good time, etc. The problem is that in american there is not enough time to enjoy yourself and as a result music that "uplifts" you is pushed aside for msuic which expresses the anger, violence, and struggle that americans face. Its still music and the good hip hop and rap artists do a good job doing it BUT you have to realize the difference in the message of the music. There is a fundemental diffenece in the rythmn, patterns, compostions, etc bewtween trance and rap. Both are used for expression. Both are msuical forms. But the difference is the sound it produces. EDM is just an enegery/uplfiting/almost spirtual music form .The closest relevtive to Trance is classical music. Upflifting and changing. Rap is can not bring the feelings of trance and trance can not create the feelings of rap.

4) Drug culture in america has created a "popular" belief that EDM is a music form enjoyed by puck ass 16-18 yrs. old kids. This has turned away impressioabel youth and yuppie americans away from edm.

LETS ALSO NOT FORGET: that hip hop and rap were a musical form created by african americans to express the struggle, happiness, etc. they faced. IT SHOULD be not suprise that the country with the largest % of african americans (USA) enjoys listeniing to hip hop. LETS ALSO REMEBER that Country Music ( YES Country Music) is the most popular in regaurds to listeners in US. The reason here again similar to hip hop and rap is Country Music was made for white americas living in rural areas. Guess what this is also a very large % of the pop. in america.

I can make this statement since I have traveled the world many times but here are some other diffences that affect preference in music:

In america we have hillbillies; rednecks, etc. Typifieds by them drinking beer all day, pick up trucks, living in trailor parks, etc. No other country has the american white trasher.

In america we have a large population of mexicans and blacks. The racism in the states is incredible in comparison to other countries.

America is a very conservative country. Their policy towards drug use , age to drink ,or go to clubs, etc is a reflection of this conservative policy. This has contributed to americas youth to abuse drugs, alchol, and create images of what it means to be an adult( i.e. im older if I drink or do drugs etc.) also effecting its preference towards "rough" angery music.

American is also one of the most affluent countries but with this the curse has been a business community which runs the food, fashion, and music industires. This explains why we americans as a majority no longer can think or do things in a independent or creative way.

Also a culture of fear and cusmption is prodominate in the states. Politicans use fear to their advatage at the same time create a highly anxious and segrated public. Media, T.V. , etc. just tell us americans to always consume. The mesage is consume and youll be happy ; a true american motto.

I could go on like this forever but I think everyone should stop and focus on what makes us diffenent instead of why my music or your music is better. Understanding this will allow us to apereicate the music and individuals that listen to the music better.

If you really like music you really need to start thinking about music in this way. This thread by no means expresses one form of music in a ty way. It only tries to explain the cultural differences between countries which explains theri taste in music.

EDM is also a fashionable, trendy, and new msuic. What better country should it be embrassed than in europe where fashion, politics, and people can also be discribed in the same manner

FOr example, in europe men dress and act very differntly than men do here in the states. The men are very "metro-sexual". In america if a man acts or dresses the same way as his european counter-part he is seen as "gay" or notlike the boys. This was the largest differneces I saw in europe.

Also, I think europe had some of the most beautiful looking people as compared to america. The over worked, fast food, dirty air, rasist america has not only made americans "ugly" form the inside but also from the outside.

I say al this as a red white and blue american myslef. But sometime we all need to sit back and realize and think about the difference of others. If we do we can learn quite abit from others and make this truely a better world.

i'm going to spit on your detailed, fantastic post with a generic response. sorry.

whatever, i like em both. people who can't accept good qualities about other music need to shove it.

you made some good points. I would deffinetly say I notice a strong seperation between lower and upper middle class in this country. Americans are the richest, yet most angry people.

I sure do think there are cultural differences around the world.

I'm not sure how conservative America is in showing so much violence on TV but putting a huge taboo on consenting adult sexuality. But anyhoo...

davepiazza, structure this into a clean essay and you've got a nice opinion piece on your hands. Cheers. :)

but it's often fun to look at the state of things and wonder why they are that way. Something that seems as individual as taste in music can be traced back to social trends. I thought it was a well thought and presented insight.

Hip hop is just as popular here, and real trance is not as popular, just like most places. It's the commercial dance scene that is more popular in Europe than USA, thats the only difference.

I don't think it's a 'fanatic' post. I'm sure his intentions meant well - but otherwise I'm with you on what you said. I like 'em both.
