Woman 'lied about swastika attack'
PARIS, France (AP) -- Just days after claiming to be the victim of an attack that stunned France, a young mother confessed to making up the story, authorities said Tuesday.
The woman claimed to have been robbed Friday by a knife-wielding gang that mistook her for a Jew and scrawled swastikas on her body.
But police, finding no clues and no witnesses, brought the woman in for questioning Tuesday, police officials said on condition of anonymity.
No details were immediately available to explain her motives for claiming to have been attacked.
Reports of the attack in a suburban Paris train outraged France, drawing fierce condemnation from politicians and Jewish groups.
The woman told police the men were of North African and African origin and that none of some 20 witnesses came to her rescue as the gang robbed her and overturned her stroller causing her infant to tumble out.
Newspapers gave the story front-page prominence Monday with headlines like "The Train of Hate."
But, by Tuesday, front pages were universally skeptical. "Questions on an attack," blared Liberation, which said the woman's account was full of "gray areas" and "contradictions."
Surveillance cameras at the station where the culprits reportedly left the train showed no young men running from the scene, and none of the alleged 20 witnesses have come forward despite repeated calls from officials and promises of anonymity.
Both France-Info radio and the television station LCI reported that the young woman had filed several complaints for violence and aggression in the past that never panned out.
Neither provided sources, but LCI said she had filed six such complaints in the past. That information could not be immediately confirmed.
Justice Minister Dominique Perben urged the public to be patient and wait for investigators to reach a conclusion.
"All the elements are being verified and screened," he said earlier Tuesday. "It is, therefore, essential to wait for this work to be finished before making up our minds one way or the other."
In a morning radio interview, government spokesman Jean-Francois Cope said that whether the woman's account proved true or not had little bearing on France's need to stem hate crimes.
"The explosion of the number of racist and anti-Semitic acts committed in our country in the last few years is a reality that we must combat," Cope told RTL radio.
The Interior Ministry released figures last week showing that hate crimes had spiked in the first half of the year. There were 510 anti-Jewish acts or threats in the first six months of 2004 -- nearly as many as in all of last year, 593.
Racist attacks were up too: There were 95 attacks and 161 threats through June, compared to 232 total such crimes reported in 2003.
+++++ I sometimes truly wonder what is wrong with some people that they do such stupid , she got a lot of people enraged, a lot of sympathy and she was nothing more than a damn liar. Why people do this, I don't know, because it detracts from the real issue.
In the US, there have been several incidents of minority college students spray-painting racist things on walls or cars, then blaming it on others. So what happens? Instead of talking about real racial issues, we have to deal with the people who are faking it. Meanwhile, when such an event really does happen, everyone immediately becomes skeptical.
Same thing happens in this case. If a woman really is assualted on the train, they're a victim, but will be treated like a criminal until otherwise proven. |

| I tend to never jump to conclusions with these acts, till the police investigate it. The world blamed the french but how can you when you hear some madeup story. The lady needs to end up in a mental institution. The media wastes time on crap like this, instead of talking about real issues that happen, not frauds. |

I'll tell you one thing this woman certainly is, she is disgusting to make such an accusation in a very sensitive time in French society. I would be hard pressed to find someone who didn't believe it was true. How disturbed someone has to be to concoct such a dastardly story in the first place, she has done it six times in differing versions. On the issue of France, immigration, etc. I'll let you read this from the beeb, "France 'forming ethnic ghettoes' " http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3871447.stm then tell me what you think.
Wonder why all the better-off families, mainly those of white European origin, were leaving such suburbs, creating an even greater sense of isolation. I'll be waiting Tito to find out from you. |

I'm not denying that such a problem exists. I'm merely saying that it's not as big as it is portrayed by some people on this board. While there are somewhere between 5% and 10% of muslims living in France, you must realize that most of them are normal people. I'd estimate the problematic population to be below 1%, which is alarming, but certainly not hopeless. |

it seems as though the kind of mentality that some white members of the United States have towards black people, in that they are fearful that black people are a big threat to them, their families and all these 'values' that they hold dear.
Maybe these values comes from Media, or from other people in their families, but it was definately evident in my time in the states.

At least in Denmark, Czech and Sweden, it goes like this: There never were any surplus of better-off white families in these neighbourhoods. They were built in the 60s and 70s at the end of the modernistic surge in architecture, and consists of big grey boring buildings. Most of them are placed outside the city centres, and the apartments in them are expensive to rent. Therefore nobody with a choice was really been thrilled to stay there, so the outcasts - armed with housing subsidies - filled them up instead. As time has passed the ranks of the outcasts have gradually been filled with immigrants, and now the ghettoes are a reality.
So you may say that the ghettoes are results of well-meaning social democrats, and reckless real estate developers. |
