Why do u all keep on saying melodic trance is dead or dying?! I think that's a load of bull! c'mon lets look at where trance is right now for a start...

The biggest club tunes of the year (as always) are melodic trance tracks. here's just a FEW!

DJ Tiesto-Urban train
Riva-Stringer
Cosmic gate-Firewire (not particually epic but def not prog either!)
Cygnus-x-Superstring
Rank 1-Such is life

and the list could go on...

The epic tunes are always so much bigger than than the progressive ones. i mean how many songs release this summer can u actually say are progressive other than anything by push (cuz he rocks!) And hard house which has SUPPOSED to have taken over trance, well.....where are the big hard house tunes?.....there are none...just average quality hrd house releases. no big tunes or classics. And if progressive is now supposed to be taking over epic then why are the million and one ibiza compilations released this summer full of epic trance and little else? yes you could say that these ibiza compilations are full of cheese and are just making trance cheese, but even on club albums its full of trance, i mean if you buy any gatecrasher or cream cd, it will be respective of the most popular tunes played in that club. And these cds are still full of epic trance... So i would be very grateful if someone could tell me whats going on with all this talk about epic dying out...cuz i just can't see it happening!

Hehe indeed. I don't know what style urban train is (Progressive?) but not melodic I think.

I think Urban Train fits nicely into the 'Epic' category haha. Maybe that's just me because EPIC TRANCE RULES ALL!!!

the tunes u listed only such is life and cygnus X is melodic/epic trance... and cygnus X is a song from 2000 not from this year...... Trance is a progressive stage on its development.... epic is kinda slowing down and less demanded...... u look at 1999 many trance djs graced the epic anthems and it was still a new sound ..but now these same djs are going to more progressive rout djing less epic...same with productions man djs are going on a progressive rout mayb not totally progressive still keeping melodies and uplifting sequences but the whole lay out of the song and its structure is way more progressive then it was before........ i LOVE EPIC its what got me into trance ...but this recent year and half....there are so many epic tunes that came out but 80% of them the production of these tunes are so weak ..espectially the beat structure ..the beats in many epic songs are very weak.... and they focuz to much on the breakdown and buildups..which afterwill people get tired of the same ....regular trance and progressive trance... is more diverse and the beat structure usually much better produced and well made........ but there are many epic/uplifting producers that still make epic tunes that are just amazing like Corsten,Armin,etc..... which still make tunes that no matter how progressive the industry comes they make amazing epic tunes that are well produced. but i really have to say the majority of epic tunes out there the quality is really doing down the drain its sucks but ohh well music always goes through changes for the better!

Urban Train is definitely epic/uplifting. Progressive is boring, looping synths and sometimes lame vocals, Urban train is definitely not this. Flight 643 on the other hand is much harder to classify, but if anything I think it's Hard Trance.

Cygnus X "Superstring" is from 1996. It was remixed by Rank 1 in 2000 and was later remixed in 2001 by Future Breeze!

cosmic gate and such is life?
nice try mate but that's bull... well at least the cosmic gate... imo it sucks... and such is life DOES suck... :p

you're right though, there's decent stuff out there like ralphie b... not to mention huge upcoming tracks that guys like pvd are playing, like second sun - empire, mirco de govia - epic monolith (already out), nu-nrg - energizer

if these tracks aren't epic/melodic, i dont know what is.

that WAS a good essential mix. :D

Epic/uplifting will NEVER die. If it dies, trance will die.

NB: Digweed can rot with his progressive house.

Eugene I am sorry to dissapoint you but last time I went to see Kimbal Colins he only played progressive trance. I was disapointed.

As on the topic of epic trance, I don't think it's dying out, I just think that there is less and less quality tunes out there. I agree with a lot of you that the scene is poluted with junk of all sorts. I still love epic don't get me wrong, but I have been listening to some progressive as of late and some of it I like. It's the same in the progressive scene, but since progressive is still not as popular a lot of people have jumped on to progressive scene just because they want to stand out from the rest of the crowd. As Christopher Lawrence said once, I am going to paraphrase here cause I don't remember exact words "I love progressive trance to death, it's cool to play it at the end of the night but it's just missing something. When I go out to the club it just does not do it for the people. That's why I try to play mostly epic stuff"
I guess the point I am trying to make is that some music just does not do it for me in the club. That's why I am falling in love with Marco-V he plays a mix of hard trance, techno, electro, epic trance.

I don't know about all of you.... but I certainly miss the days of Binary Finary - 1998, Push - Universal Nation & Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar... I guess when you discover trance, it's the original tracks you first heard, that leave the longest impression in your mind. Maybe they're just classics... but I know the music has evolved since 1998... and the quality tracks are few & far between.

Uplifting trance will not die. It may evolve - make that, it WILL evolve, but it won't die. Uplifting trance will also not be replaced by progressive - they're catering to two different audiences.

A lot of people post about how progressive "is taking over" but the fact remains, that progressive music has what you might call "a learning curve". An example: most of my friends like alternative music. I got a bunch of them to go to a local club that spins mainly hard house/prog trance this last weekend. All I heard was complaining about how boring it was, how all the songs sound the same, how it's giving them a headache (the songs ranged from digweed to Tiesto's Flight 673). Then the DJ played a few uplifting songs (Rank 1 "Airwave", Art of Trance "Madagasca") and they started dancing. I've noticed that the casual clubber usually (and i stress usually)doesn't immediately get into progressive, whereas Uplifting is a little more "listener friendly". Therefore, there will always be a need for music that sticks closer to "tried and true" dance music rather than the minimalistic experimental stuff. In about a year, progressive will hit a saturation point and some new strain of uplifting will probably hit the forefront. it will keep going back and forth like that as it has for years (remember the big electronica boom about 4-5 years ago?? which followed euroenergy before that??).

This year hasn't been all that bad for uplifting songs. The reason 98-99 stood out more was because artists seemed to have more unique sounds. These days we have a whole slew of Ferry Corsten ripoffs. It is starting to seem that almost everyone has the same synth line in their songs and that the melodies are almost the same. That generic knockoff quality is what is causing this to be a bad year. But like i said, there has been some good stuff and it looks like there's more on the horizon.
