How Do You Manage UR PLAYLIST!

hi guys,
I believe all the DJ in this world always manage their list before they go up stage... even Tiesto does it before i guess...
I mean like... the 1st song and to the closing song...
example of mine:
1. A1. Scot Project – Feelin Me
2. B1. Tiesto – Love Come Again (Mark Norman Mix)
3. A2. Cern – The Message
4. B2. Chemistry - Desire
5. A3. Aplhazone – Ravelation (ClubMix)
6. B3. Climax69 - Ambience
7. A4. Cosmic Gate - Ultra Curve
8. B4. Tiesto – Lethal Industries (Richard & John Bass Mix)
9. A5. Yoji – Theme From Bangingglobe (System F)
10. B5. NuNRG - Connective
11. A6. Sam Sharp – Twister
12. B6. Binary Finary - 2004
13. A7. Matt Darrey - Possesed
14. B7. Raptor – There will be light Mixed3
15. A8. Blank N jones – zero gravity (envoi)
16. B8. Matt Hadrick – Day One
17. A9. Envio – Touch By sun
I will use this as my sets... My climax is from track 3 to 9

Too roboto.. sorry i dont get what is "Roboto"... do u mean is "monotone" It is not good to use list beside u or had ur vinyl lineup??
Please tell me.. hehe..
cause im a beginner DJ who had just qualified in pitch bending.. and i will give a shot in a club :)

I very highly doubt anyone plans any set beforehand. That would be pretty damn boring, really, if the DJ didn't react to the audience's feelings at all.
I'm sure the most will only plan the first few tunes and possibly the closer, the rest will follow naturally depending on the vibe. |

You hit the nail on the head...
I tryed pre-planning my sets for about a week, and finally said " THIS"... it wasn't interesting to me anymore, it got so boring, and I didn't really get to experiment and try new things.. I haven't played in a club yet.. err.. for a crowd of a real size.. but for me, when I am spinning I go off my own vibe, and how I am feeling.. Usually the ends of my sets are CRAP cuz I am goin nutz dancin around my room, and in correalation, forget that I am actually DJing.. :haha:
Try spinning a set just on feelings alone, and I garuntee it will be better than anything you can pre-plan... |

| it mostly just depends on the energy of the crowd. i've never played out yet but i guess djs have a vague idea of what they want to play judging by the energy feel.. but then again it might change half way thru their set so things might not go as planned. pre planned sets never work. i've seen some djs use it and it is sooo boring. |

i was gonna type robotic, but roboto sounded cool lol
i have a rough idea of what kind of set i want to play when i go out through the vinyl i select to play, however, i have often changed my set completely to the initial basic idea of what i was going to play when i get there because of the dj on before me, the venue, and the crowd

Actually, contrary to popular belief a lot of the major guys do plan. Sasha for one, It's been said that Armin does too.
But you have to keep in mind that they can afford to do so because they get to headline and people expect to hear certain songs from them. Not to mention a certain standard. They also play venues where reading the crowd is perhaps less important as people are already geared up for what the DJ will do. It's different when you play at a local club as sometimes people come out and don't always want to be there.
But to get to that standard you have to learn to read crowds and work the dancefloor so get rid of any ideas of doing a pre programmed set anytime soon.
Learn to interact with people and pay your dues.

sometimes pre-planning can be mistaken for just experience.
If someone like Tiesto or Armin drops 4 tunes in order A-B-C-D @ Amnesia and the crowd goes right off...
its likely the next time they get record A out of the bag... they'll remember it goes so well with record B... and the order will repeat itself.
The same with if the Dj likes a certain mix - the ever expectant backspin between Flight 643 and Fancy Fair when Tiesto mixed these in 2001/02...
As well as certain tunes sticking to a certain dj.. certain mixes will as well. at the moment i think Tiesto's belongs between the new G&D Remix of Evanescence - Hello and his own Traffic. But surely u can understand that there is more to it that playing a set of records u've already planned - that would mean at some point in a gig u'll look like a spacker...
cos the crowd will wanna go one way - when u go the other.

couldn't have put it better myself ;)
i would only really ever plan the last tune in a set. you need to know that the last tune is going to stick in peoples heads and make them want more (which you should duly give if the bouncers will let u, and you can't plan that :p). i dont even see how you can realistically plan your first tune until you have heard what the dj before you has ended his/her set with, unless of course you are warming up, in which case nobody will care that much, there will be about 10-20 ppl there for it :p
spontaneity (courtesy of dictionary.com) is the key, and it will ultimatly give better results! |

I have a huge problem with track selection. In my mind it sounds like a match made in heaven but when I put it on it doesn't quite sound like what I intended it to sound like.
Programming a tracklist according to 'feelings' and crowd reactions is all good, but as a dj confined to my bedroom I find it hard to work the 'crowd reactions' part, which I think contributes as a huge factor in what tracklist programming is all about.
I long to play in front of a trance-loving crowd and see what this crowd reaction thingy is all about.
Maybe when I finally get to play out, it will all fall into place. :) |
