Review - James Lavelle @ System

For all you people that sucked out, you missed a lot of fun, dancefloor was half full, tons of room and hardly any druggies. The only person smoking was James Lavelle and no one did anything about it. The only problem is that Lavelle played too many old records. Full review up on ivibes.nu (later today). Massive props to John for hooking me up with the guestlist (john, your thanks is in the ivibes.nu article as well). James Lavelle is truly a weird character, from his dress to his actions to his records, just unique. I need sleep, fun night.

Your welcome man ... I hope you got in fine, Deep Groove forgot to compose the list and I had to compile it and rush it to the door ppl.

I hope you enjoyed your night. BTW, I didn't even see you .. where were you all night?

what a jip! ~meh! the guy should be ashamed of himself for putting on such a disgracefully selfish set, especially as a GU dj! total piss-take from the beginning! i know lavelle can be an excellent dj, but whatever it was he did tonite ... uugh! no comment. :conf:

AND the croooowd & vibe ... omg... don't even get me started. ruined my mood & nite!

real quality sets and/ or nites out in TO seem to be a rare treat these days ... :wtf:

I wasnt there, but knowing Lavelle, he does get quite experimental. Not really the best music for dancing sometimes. If he wavered off into his "trip-hop downtempo" sound, im sure the vibe on the dance floor wasnt great. Hopefully you had a few joints to get into a state where you can actually enjoy that kind of music. I personally love those kind of sounds, but not for a club.

thanks for the compassion, jeff. but this was certainly not trip hop ... more like hardcore redneck punk d&b ..whatever ...who knows? it was horrrrrid!!! ...yea j's woulda helped but no such luck. was 'stone' sober actually ... although he did play his In a State track, which was the only good things of the nite! ... where the heck were you??

Wow!
James rocked it again.

props to John for the guestlist, happy that i got to say hello this time, thanks a lot.

got there @ 11 Lee Osborne was spinning some hard techno stuff, which got better and better , by 2 a.m he was totally rocking it.

and Mr. James L...
having seen him last year @ Lotus, knew what to expect from him, but this time he was way better.

suprised to see so many ppl turn up for this event, system wasn't packed but was pretty crowded , and a few totally ed up ppl here and there, but no problem.

JL opened his set:
1-DJ Shadow - GDMFSOB (dub remix)
2-Queens Of The Stone Age - No One Knows - Unkle Reconstruction
3. Unkle - In A State - LP Version

In a State drove everyone crazy(pretty predictable) and then he went one with his "weird" business.( seven army nation was one of them)

I know a lot of ppl complain about his track selections and taste, but last night was witness to something a had heard about his Fabric nights: the crowd was banging and dancing, although Disko-kandi claimes he was boring, but the crowd i saw last night didn't seem bored at all, on the contrary they were dancing and having a good time, which was suprising too.

thing is, as i said before, one has to have a basic understanding and knowledge of what he spins (heavily rock influenced) that's his trademark , he's quite different from all GU djs and that's exactly why they asked him to to 2 albums, GU ppl are not dumb.

Also take a look at Involver, how many U.N.K.L.E tracks can you see?

i'm not debating anyone here but just pointing out maybe the trends and tastes are changing in the EDM scene and we're not catching up, still stuck with sterotyping prog/trance/techno.

James Zabiela is also another case, that's breaking the rules and lines.

IMO we should be more open to knew genres and blends of electronic music.:toocool:

at the end, last night was another chance ruined to meet our lovely TOTAs again, but at least i'm happy they were there and having a good time.
hope to meet you guys some day ;)

oooooh fill in the blanks, my favorite !!!!

it's 'sad' i know...imma little 'ed' up, not to mention bored as well so i figured i'd post. Can't say i missed Lavelle at Sys, his GU Baracelona was great, but the recent GU Romania and his set at Guv just didn't excite me enough to go and check him out again.

Probably should stick to just producing...my 2 cents anyway.

Lavelle rocked it like I knew he would! I met him a few years back at Fabric at London and ever since hearing him spin there and listening to his Barcelona GU I've been a fan. He thew done some great beats and of course an UNKLE track here and there along with remixes of White Stripes, Nirvana and Queens of the Stone Age - I was ecstatic when he played Tenaglia's? remix of Depece Mode I feel Loved....think he needs to toss that record though as it skipped to hell!

Anyway it was a great night...hadn't been to system in awhile but definitely a good time to make a return for JL. Crowd seemed in a great mood and loving his set. Thanks for the drink John - will have to do it again real soon.

I'm surprised there are such mixed reviews. Glad I decided to hit up film instead of system.

Booooo, I'm glad I didn't go! Sounds like there was a pretty decent turn out for this too. Too bad it wasn't a better party.
