yeah toronto trance, that sound is what kinda did prog in... i was told at the time by my label that melodies were "frowned upon"... even in the midst of it all, i tried to keep some semblance of musicality, but anyone who heard me dj from 2000-2001 knows that there were times that i "fell into" some plodding ass sets and sometimes didnt quite pull up out of it before the end of my set. sometimes, though, i recall spanning the breadth of dark prog and noncheesy melodic trance and having a great time, but i must say that more often than i am proud to admit i tried to be "too cool for school" and play to only the clued up people in the room. maybe i still do that but at least its some melodic and funky shizzle for my nizzles! =)
funny thing was, back in the dark ages, i was often too melodic for the digweed followers, and too plodding for the diehard trancers. funny how that grey area can kill you... then again i did have over 1000 ppl every sat at my residency in orlando, the last big weekly prog night this town has seen... so it wasn't ALL bad... =)

just kidding...
hope all is well

Noel -
I think every artist has their moment. You had some bad ass tracks back in the 90's. They were what got you on the map. I went out of my way more than once just to come see you. Times changed and so did the music scene. It happens. I do know that when you opened for Tiesto on his US tour last year your set was bad ass. You still have it. You just have this positive energy about you and it radiates back into the people. Maybe you have had your ups and downs as a producer, but when it comes to you as an entertainer you never fail to deliver.
I remember like it was yesterday driving all the way to SC to see you perform and listen to Paul (Santana) spin. I think your got all screwed up with the plane. The show got delayed. The promoters weren't prepared. It was like a true rave there...very underground. We were all like WTF?! :wtf: haha! You stayed level headed through the whole ordeal. Not once did you act pissy or show your ass. The promoters got their together (I assume) and eventually you went on...approximately two hours late. By then a lot of people had left. You were the headliner and they had you on at some ridiculous hour because of the delays. But you delivered...just like you always do...and the people loved you. A lot of artists would have flipped out under those conditions or at least became irritable. Instead you just chilled with us and made the best of the situation. Even after the Tiesto show...you took the time to hang out with me. That's what seperates you from a lot of other artists. To me you have remained the same person that I first met back in the 90's...very down to earth and a pleasure to be around.
I wish nothing but good things for you. ;)

| personally, i like all kinds.. from chillout to jazz to house to breakbeat to house to trance .. but out of the "get on the dance floor" songs ... it seems breakbeat songs i am least involved in .. i am semi-involved, but still .. i like it only to a certain extent .. i can't get too extreme to the max to the type of beat .. sometimes i can, but it just phases out of my head in a week... i guess i turn ADD when it comes to beats .. i am looking for something else .. |

Noel, thanks for sharing this insight with us straight from your mouth. I've learned something new from this, and I have newfound respect for your work as well. :)
Why are so many people scared of melody? Is it like sunlight to vampires? |

I just started buying breaks as well.
Stuff from my crate. (mostly funky)
DJ Sharaz – Signal Jammer
DJ Fixx - Jump (Look into DJ Fixx)
DJ Eclipse - Take me Higher
Scot Project - U
DJ Icey - And Go
DJ Icey - Searching
Plump DJ's - Weighed down (a must check out, IMO)
Huda Hudia - Move my Body
I'm a big Trance fan so I'm still looking for this
Trance Breaks sound. Seems hard to find.
I'll I want is a, Good Trance Melody with the Phat Funky Break Beat.
Amen
Good luck with the Breaks, it will open up a world of possible "dj tricks" compared to Trance in general. That is if your a DJ.
Amen X 2 for “FLAVOR” yo. |
