Commercial Trance (this is so going to be unpopular!)

Hey everyone,

This is my first post on this site! After being a regualr visitor for about a year, I thought I would write and post an almost definitely controversial point of view!

Commercial Trance: Is it as bad as everyone makes out? "Yes" I assume you're replying right now, but hear me out!

I honestly don't know the answer to this, but why does commercial trance shift copies off the shelf, and all the supposoedly good stuff that everyone raves about on these boards only makes it onto specialised compilations at the very most.

I would love more than anyone to walk into my local HMV and see the likes of Dumonde, Nikola Gala or Super 8 for example plastered all over the 'new singles' section. But seldom does it happen.

The other point I would like to make is that when you're in a general club, it's as near damn impossible to get the DJ to play any Trance. The consistent R'n'B, Hip-hop and cheese is very, very annoying. The closest you can get to Trance is to request some 'Cheesey commercial trance', a few classics being DJ Sammy - Heaven, Ian van Dahl Lasgo or heck, even Scooter! It's always nice to hear one of these tunes come on and then to see alot of people filling the floor as a result. Ultrabeat - Pretty Green Eyes (CJ Stone remix) is one that blows me away with the massive break into the synth strings. I like it, and I'm not afraid to say that I do!

As you may be guessing, I quite like some commercial stuff as well as the more underground tunes. The commercial ones are the best introduction to give people in the Trance music scene, and hopefully they'll explore further.

Being skint at the end the year at uni, I invested 50% of my finances in a CD by Tiesto - Just Be. After being raved about in several reviews in magazines and what with him being a supposedly world renowned DJ with the most superlative technical ability, I was thoroughly disappointed with all but three tracks on the album, especially with the Adagio for Strings. I would have sooner brought an Ian van Dahl album, because I would know what I'd be getting.

As everyone I'm sure knows, just because something is not commercial, doesn't mean that it's good. Some people on here try to find the most obscure Trance music and it seems their theory goes that the more unkown it is, the better it is. Everyone's taste in Trance is different, as in music in general. But people usually recognise an all round good track. I've read postings on this board about artists that as a result I've gone out and bought(or downloaded!) CDs with their music on, but have been disappointed. No names, but sake we'll call him Luke Chable!

I want Trance to do well and to return to the 1999 era, but I feel we have to support the artists who are 'commercial'. I think it's only by doing this that we'll get to see the stuff that everyone talks about on here come out in the shops and be available to a wider audience.

Please let me know what you think...

Incidently, the tune I'm listening to at the moment is Super - Alba!

Thanks for reading!

PS Paul van Dyk is THE BEST!!!!:D

i read it...and i'm biting my tongue because you're new hehehe. i will say that i don't think we should support those artists which we don't like their sound...so for you, don't support tiesto...and for me...i won't support all the crap you said you listen to

We need the whole diversity of the trance spectrum and more. Without the stuff you detest, where's the stuff you really LOVE? There's got to be a whole selection to pick and choose from, and inevitably, you gravitate more towards some stuff than others and continue your travels from there. If "commercial trance" as we know it today didn't exist at all, we'd surely class a different type of music under the same label. Matter of perspectives... it's a whole trance-ecosystem, I tells ya ;)

I cant tell how long uve been listening to trance but it doesnt seem like very long and once u get more exposed to the good stuff I think ure opinon will change, its ok to start somewhere but where u finish is the true testament. I for example started with the likes of eiffel 65 and Rollergirl, then onto Oakie and PvD Tiesto all uplifting and now reside in the likes of Grayarea, Lemon 8, Hybrid, and the beautiful world that is progressive this took about 4 good years so I urge you to give it sometime but then again listen to what you like, just dont tell anyone...j/k

sorry but ur abit simple if u dont understand why commercial music flys of shelfs more than more underground stuff.
commercial music is aimed at young teenagers hence the cheesy song with a bouncy pop type melody just for the purpose of making money to rip people of if u notice most people that r into commercial trance r young teenagers and if u go into a cheesy nightclub it is just full of 16and17 year olds.
then try going to a proper trance club an all nighter u will notice that the audience is generaly older and more mature u rarely get any trouble in a proper club and the music is made cose the dj/producers love the music not cose they want to rip people of out of there money all the time.

Sorry, but that's a stupid reason for choosing one album over another. That's like saying "Oh, I'll buy this blank CD-R to listen to, because at least I know what'll be on it". Whatever happened to branching out?

Now, I'm not the biggest fan of the new Tiesto album, and I agree it deserves plenty of critisism. And if you enjoy tunes with cookie-cutter vocals, that's your prerogative. But to say that "we have to support the artists who are 'commercial'" is ridiculous. You should support the artists who you think deserve most recognition...

I'm not saying to rush out and buy the next Flip 'n' Fill CD. What I am saying is don't be afraid to buy trance just because it's 'comercial'. One of the best £13 I ever spent was on Paul van Dyk's 'Reflections', and I'm glad I put my money his way so he can keep producing the stuff that he does. My point is ultimately that pop trance shouldn't be overlooked just becuase it's well known...

And for the record, I've been listening to Trance for about 4 years... (believe it or not!)
