You pay $1200 for a 2 bedroom apt in MANHATTAN?...Whaty part? Washington Heights? Spanish Harlem? Univercity Heights?....Unless your father owns the building, you are not getting descent ONE bedroom apt south of 110th street, let alone a 2 bedroom...impossible!!
I lived in Manhattan in 2 different places...
St Marks Place in a studio = $1250
57th between 3rd & 2nd in a one bedroom = $1600
Manhattan is expensive as hell...thats why i live in CT now..lol
Anything cheaper then 1500 in Manhattan is a dump...FACT!!..unless you want to live in a 12th story walk up, in a studio...or maybe a pseudo-one-bedroom, which is really just a studio with an alcove....
And never forget the "Manhattan $20 door tax"..because everytime you leave your apt you are bound to drop 20 on soemthing or another in the city...so factor that into your budget...
Hate to break the news to people..but if you are not making MINIMUM $70,000 per year (and thats low balling it), then you will not be living the "Sex and the City" or "Friends" lifestyle....you will hardly be gettin by...
Dont be fooled by the people who CLAIM they have a great apt and only pay 1200 a month...they are either living so far uptown that you may as well save the money and live in Jersey or they are living in Alphabet city in a itty bitty walkup hitting mommy and daddy up every week for food money...trust me on this...
There are alternative though
1. Make more money
2. Brooklyn <---Park Slope beats any part of Manhattan now a days
3. Queens <----So many nice parts...my friend has a 1 bedroom and pays $650..square footage = 1400 in Astoria
I suggest www.craigslist.com when looking for an apt...many good deals..but you better act fast...

i was acctaully leaning really hard towards living in manhatten when my girlfriend and i decided to move.... so i did a lot of apt searching(craigslist,ardorny,newspapers). let me tell you.... unless you are living in one of those areas tiesto14 mentioned, you're not gonna get a 1 br apt in the city, for under 1500..let alone a 2 BR for 1200. and if you do find one, the bedroom will be as small as a janitors closet. even studios in the city run 1100 plus.

do not mean to intrude, but how old are you? i'm wondering because i'm kinda car-shopping and trying to get actual insurance costs from as many people as i can for people in nyc |

i'd like to see a nice 2bdrm in manhattan for 1200...
anything within a brief train ride to manhattan has gotten ridiculous (that goes for adjacent spots in jersey, queens, and bklyn) -- i stayed in providence this year rather than moving to a hobbit hole in my price range in nyc |

Darien...next town over from Stamford....
Such a difference from NYC...i was born and raised in NYC...lived on 70th between 5th and Mad till i was 24..then i moved out on my own to the Village then to midtown , now to CT....

There are lot's of those in Manhattan for 1200...all you need is a time machine to travel back to 1992...hey while your in 1992 stop by the Shelter on Friday night and tell Scottie at NASA Brooks says "hi"..
if i was to move back to NYC (which i plan to sooner or later), it wont be to Manhattan..i would shoot for Park Slope, Brooklyn...freaken hot spot right now... |

| i was in west hartford area... more towards central CT. yea.. i know where darien is... stamford is a up and comming city... getting pretty expensive there(living wise). but yea, darien would be a BIG change of pace for anyone coming directly out of the city. good luck there.... i give you couple years before you want to move back.. lol. |

Park Slope IS more expensive then Manhattan...but it's so freaken nice...well worth the cash...unlike dirty Manhattan..... |

all this talk abouta prices make my head spin. for the longest time my parents rented from a friend of that fam, nice neighborhood in gravesend brooklyn, 3 bedroom, and lg rooms. We just moved out paying $900/m and i said they were crazy but they wanted to buy a house- u think rents are high in ny, try buying! Well they found a cute house in SI and im giving this commute a shot. Anyone here find it cheaper living in SI? i know some people who live here and commute to nyc/bklyn via ferry and bus only. i have a car so i drive.
I dunno how i would be able to rent alone so for now im staying put, but rents in bklyn are crazy too. I work in park slope and anythig near a train will run you 1200 and up, and most are small hole in the wall walkin type apartments. The nice ones are really pricey. i think that coney isle, bayridge and bensonhurst are more affordabkle but futher from the city so what u save in money u lose in a longer commute.
Side-note i am born and bred bklynite and have seem MANY transplant nyers leave in 6 months to a yr. NYC is not for evryone! The key to affordable living LOSE the car- alt side parking rule alone are a reason to lose it, not to mention insurence. If you live near the city you dont need the car. you need a car in the outskirts of the outer boroughs- if i lived in parkslope/downtown bklyn id get rid of the car. i was living on the last stop on the F line so a car was very convinent mostly for saftey reasons at nite.

| Ive lived in miami, Jupiter and now NYC. NYC is dope..... But cost a lot i could be renting a 3br house in FL for the price of my 2br apartment here in NYC.... My apt is 1500 a month for about 900sq ft... |

Get a broker, you will have to pay them a couple of bucks like a 1 time fee and then cancel theyre services after you renew with your ins co. They will shop around for you and find you the best deals. Thats the route I took when I was a newb driver cuz I knew if anyone even accepted me the prices would be sky high. You can shop around yourself but these people have a database of info and alot of companies in theyre system. I can recommend a good one if you want pm me but its in queens. Dont know where u live. When you call them you dont have to go there or anything just tell them what kind of car it is and they will give you a window amount. |
