yes...that's right...i'm actually asking for real thoughts on something...

so i was thinking today as i watched some interview with Barbara Walters about how she is like 76 or something and still looks pretty young. So then i started thinking about aging and about the increase in lifespan over time and stuff (yes i know...very deep thoughts hehehe), so my question to you is...

is there a point when we will not be able to live any longer? what do you think that is? of course body parts where out over time especially with exposure to smoking, drinking, diet etc, but what if science in the near future allows us to grow a new liver, or new lungs, or new heart? will that increase our ability to live longer and longer? and if that does happen...would there be a pyhsical restraint on how long a person could actually live for?

I don't know if there's a limit. Science can probably, at least in the distant future, keep us alive for eons, what with all the advancements and such. As far as just letting our bodies go, I'd say 120 or 130.

There was a guy on TV not too long ago; 90-something, and he still worked at a job. Let me tell you, he looked quite healthy. It was pretty cool.

apparently the thing that actually makes us age and die is oxygen - go figure

explain please...

its to do with the way you generate energy in the mitochondria in your cells - when they use oxygen as a means of generating energy, theres all these bits that break off and damage the cell from within - hence why all cells die

Through genetic engineering, the lifespan of C. elegans can be increased by a factor of nearly three by manipulating the insulin receptor gene daf-2. There isn't sufficient data about the factors contributing to human senescence to know if genetic engineering can produce similar results in humans, but if it is possible it will be significantly more complex.

Others have theorized that lengthening the telemores in certain cells humans can achieve a greatly enhanced life span. This hypothesis has yet to be tested to a sufficient degree to draw any conclusions.

-=M=- is correct that oxygen contributes to aging by generating reactive oxygen species which can create free radicals and damage the protein which makes up your DNA. Sugar can also cause damage through a process called glycation. Whether this damage will be correctable by future medical technology is purely speculation, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I remember seeing a documentary about this, there making a drug that helps you live longer, could live upto 200 years, what they were saying is, the part of you that reproduces cells loses abit of information with every cell it makes, so as you get older, you don't reproduce the cells to how they should be, what this drug does is makes your reproduction system remember the cell information 100%, so when your 100 yrs old, your cells are still being made EXACTLY like when you were first born, I can't really explain it well, being stoned and drunk and all, plus it was afew years ago, but one thing that makes me wonder about this drug is, if it DOES reproduce the cells exactly, then wouldn't that mean you wouldn't age from the time you take it, so if you took it as a baby, you would stay like a baby, or if you took it at 20, you would stay looking that same way, also, does the drug just help the skin cells or all cells, I dunno, if you've kept reading till now, your probably as confused as I am.
