Im a bit of an elitist when it comes to bikes, I guess. i have a friend whos been riding for 30 years on a cruiser, never even laid his bike down much less crashed.

Other friend been on a sport bike and crashed 7 times (5 on a track though).

I just like knowing that I can handle anything that comes my way within reason. I used to ride dirt bikes. They are a lot of fun. With street tires on youll be fine. Just dont be expecting to take it to the track or act like the motogp dudes. Youll still have fun pushing it to the limit, but get at least a 450 (which is min req for street if I remember right). Small bikes piss out on corners typically because their low end torque cant match with everything on the apex.


anywho. It comes down to knowing the limitiations of your bike, and abiding by them. Dont play bike racer on a dirt bike. Its a cheap, great way to get around, lots of people do it safely and have fun.

The key to everything is knowing limits. Thats my point. Be aware, test them out, feel when it starts to slip when you practice on an empty road. Gun it, brake hard. See what your bike does. Then use those and apply it to your street riding. If I hadnt i would have had some serious crashes already.

about the 450cc, how fast does it go as in comparison to a 200cc, when does it top out and what's a pretty easy speed for it to maintain, and is a 450cc considered a thumper (sorry for the term, thats what my friend said it was a long time ago, apologize if that's not what the bikes with higher ccs are called). As far as me trying to act like a bad ass shouldn't be a problem, I'm not going to try to pull any macho bs when I'm really not, it's just me focusing on the ride, the affectiveness of the ride, performance etc.
what about the license, did you have to wait or what, as far as the whole process went, it says now that you don't have to do a road test if you have a class C license already and you can just waiver the class M road test.

here they got rid of classes and say if you take your test on a 250cc honda, you are licensed for a 2200 cc 1.5 second bike hehe.

I took a motorcycle safety course (MSF) because it lowers insurance and lets you practice low speed maneuvers.

Lets see here...well, a 450 will probably go about 80mph and do 0-60 in 6 seconds or so. compared to an 800cc doing 3.5 0-60 with 160mph top. The main thing is this. Today I went riding with a friend on a 500cc sport tourer. after 3 corners I didnt see him for another 5 seconds. He needed the torque from the 7ooo rpm range (the top of his compared to a 13ooo on my bike) but he couldnt shift up because the torque from that would actually slow him down instead of speeding up.

Some bikes pull from any range, just more so from certain points. Power bands are key. Also, his carb is more powerful than his engine, which means at certain RPMs it cuts out. Dangerous in cornering. I like fuel injectors on bikes. So much smoother.

A 250cc will be a putter. Youll top around 60-70 and just kind of cruise everywhere. Which is fine if thats your goal. Again, just realize you arent going to be layin down rubber or anything.

a 250 is a peppy feeling bike in a lot of senses. Its lighter so with you on it should still be fast for your low end speeds around 1-40/50 mph. An around town zipper. Still a neat bike.

thanks man, actually I live in Dallas now, I moved here a few years ago (I'm actually in a suburb near by Dallas, so it's not like I'm zooming around downtown Dallas),what about price ranges and the best places to get them, a dealership, searching the net? and how drastic of a change is it between a 500cc, or a 200cc or just how does it change as the ccs get higher, anyways, gotta sleep, feel free to post if you come up with some thoughts,

Can you ride?

The last place you ever want to learn how to ride is on the road. You probably want a few years experience before getting onto the highway.

Get a cheap dirtbike and practise first off-road if you can.

Take an MSF since youre in america, they are nation wide. Youll get a very excellent training and itll be fun. dont worry about learning it isnt that hard.

the handling of the bike will be mainly governed by two things: CC and Weight.

the more CCs the more low end torque thatll be able to push heavier weights. If this is sport bike itll weigh less, therefore being faster and peppier and harder off the line. If its a cruiser itll be heavier and be a nice steady accelerator.

a 250 by itself would fly, but youll find that you will NEVER be able to take a passenger on anything less than a 600cc. It just wont happen. Which sucks, because girls boobs in your back is awesome. Every lb makes a difference on bikes, and an extra 100 or so will kill a 250. A single rider is almost too much sometimes.

Ya, I guess it gets more expensive when you up the ccs huh? well most bikes I looked at were about 250lbs and I weigh like 120, I'm pretty damn skinny, but I think I would just be taking myself. My mom is still kind of concerned about the safety obviously, but I mean if I'm all armored up, it shouldn't be too bad, I'll be doing 60 tops, prolly not even 50 on a daily basis. There's a little bike store near by, wheels world or something like that, I'll check it out just to get a feel of the atmosphere, prices, performance, etc.
what does falling feel like, I mean not too great obviously, but I mean if you take a hit to the ground would it do damage, because you're covered on the sliding situation and all that but what about bones and stuff like that, how well does the armor protect, have you been in a wreck ever by the way?

P.S. There's a little bike store near by, wheels world or something like that, I'll check it out just to get a feel of the atmosphere, prices, performance, etc.

I wouldn't rule out trail bikes as a good beginners option. They generally have very little to break when you drop them, have a lot of low end torque which beginners need, and their high sitting position allows you to see over traffic. The downside is if you are short you may have trouble reaching the ground comfortably, and whatever you do make sure you get tyres that are decent for the road. pure track tyres offer very little grip on sealed roads.

ya, I'm not very short, so I shouldn't have trouble with the ground clearance, how do you know if it fits you, should your feet be flat when you are on it or should you have to stand on one foot to balance during stops?
