teh differnce is that sound is from the wavelength in a cd is created by a laser whilst the sound from vinyl is created from a needle. Large Difference in method and asa result diffence in sound quality.

when recording to cd with a laser, you're recording 0's and 1's right? according to my experience with data cd's, it's not very common for there to be wrong information pressed, apart from ocasional errors. therefore, i get to the conclusion that, from the digital source, it gets recorded EXACTLY as it was on the WAV file, with absolute no loss of quality.
when recording to vinyl what happens is that the sound is "analoguized". it is converted from digital to analog, therefore the end result doesn't reproduce as exactly and accurately the sound as in cd. what you can argue is that this conversion makes it sound better for your ears, however this is subjective and depends on how you like it. in my opinion the convertion while giving some life to the bass, often "muddens" the mid-high frequencies, which is what i don't like, i prefer the precision of digital sound.
it is a whole different deal when the source is actually analogue (like on those DATs). there, it is obvious that cd will lose frequencies and sampling rate, virtually infinite on the source, limited by the norms of the digital medium. i believe that however the recording from analogue to analogue can add a little bit of almost un-noticeable noise or loss of quality, compared to recording from digital to digital where there is no such thing. |

| Analog sound is definitely better than cd. It is also a lot harder to damage vinyl than cd. Granted you can scratch vinyl and it will skip if so, but most of the horrible skips I have heard at clubs have come from cd's being played. Micro did it once here in Denver. It wouldn't clear the skip either. Sound itself isn't what makes me like vinyl, but the ability to manipulate it through feel. I know they have some sick cd tables now, but they still don't have the feel of vinyl. To each his own, I guess. |

| as for the getting the song to the label issue. to get a vinyl pressed you either use a DAT tape, 8 or 16 track reel, or a cd with a RAW format UNCOMPRESSED audio file. WAV is compressed format, not as compressed as MP3 but it is still compressed. |

Vinyl vs CD
i know its 8 pgs long but check out the latter pages and there are some long posts. oh, and vinyls are better. i just bought my first vinyls and i think using CDs is kinda weak. oh and if you use a laptop for everything, you should be shot :D |

| I rather see a deejay spinning vinyls myself but most deejays use both these days. Dave Clarke always seems to be on a different wavelength than the rest of the world anyway. Sasha will try anything, he's Sasha, people will see him because he is Sasha. I can understand losing the vinyl cases is a pain. I like CDs more than Vinyl these days because I don't deejay and they take up less space but I have a decent collection of vinyl and I see the addiction with them. I say if the right song is played in the club, if it is on vinyl or CD, does it matter?. The big deejays are like that because they play the tracks that everyone does not have yet wants to hear and they have the deck skills. Vinyl won't die anytime soon I reckon, it's an addiction for many. |

Okay lets bring something up that most people haven't. Vinyl was first, the sound quality was good and the average person still wasn't satisfied so they brought in the eight track tapes, then the cassette tapes (sure no one dj'd with them but that is not the point!) and finally cd's. So what is the point? Technology will always be improving, it's how companies make more money. There will be, in the future, something better than a CD or a mini disk or even a computer chip. I think Vinyl will be around forever though. It's survived this long when nothing else has and the sound is still great. As long as there is a market for Vinyl they will be there.
Also, there is simply no point in a discussion over what is better. People should just let things be as they are. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Personally, I like them both. |

| comparing the vinyl that is produced today to the vinyl in the 70's and 80's is futile, the manufacturing process is alot different as is the design of the cart's for the decks. sound quality alone its prooven that vinyl is better since it does not rely on a sampling rate. i htink the debate now is over personal preffernce which is fine. |

First of all, tapes, eight tracks and cd's do not have better sound quality than vinyl, they are just smaller and easier to transport. Secondly, any can go and download a song. There is something to having a rare track on record that adds validity. And if one downloads the tracks and burns them to cd, you are changing mediums and, more than likely, losing sound quality there too. I haven't used the cd mixers much, but I know most of the pioneers don't have the torque of a turntable. It is a completely different feel. But, mostly, I don't wanna spin just cd's cause I think it's sorry. It is the cheap and easy way out. If you wanna spin cd's go ahead, I won't blame you. Myself, on the other hand, might use a cd track here and there, when it isn't released, and that's gonna be it. |
