Today is the anniversary of the blackout of 2003.
Im sure everyone has a story.
Last year, 2 days before Oakey was to spin at guv the power went out.
When it happened, i was sitting at my desk at work. My overhead light started to dim which made me think we are having a brown out so i remember thinking to myself "i'll do my part to conserve and shut my lights off". 2 seconds later power went out, i didnt realize it at first cuz my laptop was still working off battery and the network was running on emergency back up . After realizing what happened i joined the rest of the building to come up with theories and search cnn or cbc for terrorist attacks. I remember looking out the window to the construction going on in the middle of the road and saying they probably cut the power lines. So, 2 girls i work with went outside and accused them of cutting our power. LOL. Then we found out it was the whole North Eastern region.
I left waterloo to return to hamilton. Took the back roads to avoid chaos on the highways. Since my parents were away on vacation, i hurried to the restaurant to put everything in the big freezers.
The next day, we had the biggest and best bbq ever which we still talk about and call "blackout 2003 party". Awesome time.
Oakey finished off that great weekend at guv.
Whats your story?

I sat on my 17th floor balcony and looked at Toronto, I get a 270 degree view of toronto.
It was... amazing, so quiet, so peaceful. So dark... |

I was working at wonderland! And, as you can imagine, all the rides stopped. Fortunately, most of the rides at wonderland have fail safes in the sense that once they start they use kinetic energy etc. to complete. However, one ride, the boat that goes up and down like a swing, couldn't stop! Kids were stuck on it, swinging, for an extended period of time and started blowing chunks over the side :( The managers of the park eventually had to physically step in and manually stop it, lol. After, we got paid to just walk around the park and direct people out of the park. Then, all the employees went and had a wonderland financed BBQ!
Such a sweet day! |

| It's the pendulum boat, and without power brakes, good luck defying the laws of physics, and getting all the momentum stopped lol. |

I was working my day job at the time ... power went out and my boss calls to send me home. Got home and rush to a chinese resturant to buy food for my parents and got ripped off :haha: Chilled outside for a while and talked to a few ppl. Later on the night, Deep Groove and I went racing in the streets with the lights off :stongue:
On that day, I realize ... how friendly we can be if we only tried. Strangers talking to strangers and having a jolly time. Once the power came back, the normal attitude was back to normal. |

I was working in a warehouse @ the time, and the power went out just as I was making a turn on my machine... took it right into the wall and had to leap off into a slot full of boxes..
My favorite part of the blackout had to be walking the danforth early in the am, getting barbeque, grabbing a beer here and there since bylaw oficers weren't working... goodtimes |

Hehe, funny how everyone loved this... perhaps we should just reconsider our way of living... hehe.. or perhaps not...
anyway, you should be glad it didn't happen 12 januari or something... that would have been terrible... |
