he Nation's No. 1 Party College Is...

...the State University of New York at Albany.

That's the word from the Princeton Review's annual college rankings based on a 70-question survey completed by 110,000 students on campuses nationwide. And while all college administrators vie to have their school be considered the one with the best undergraduate academic experience--top honors go to the University of Chicago this year--or the best academic bargain for your tuition buck--that would be New College of Florida among public schools and William Jewell College among private schools--none of them want the title of No. 1 party school. That designation is made based on the answers to questions about the amount of alcohol and drug consumption, the amount of time students spend studying, and the popularity of fraternities and sororities.

This is the ninth time that SUNY at Albany has made the list of party schools. Last year it was No. 14; in 1998, it was No. 1. The University of Colorado at Boulder ranked as the No. 1 party school last year.

Conscientious grown-ups, namely university presidents, medical experts, and parents who pay hefty tuition bills to these schools, deride this particular ranking as irresponsible and unscientific. Meanwhile, students cheer when their school is recognized as a party-hearty place to be.

The top 10 party schools for 2005 are:

1. SUNY at Albany
2. Washington and Lee University
3. University of Wisconsin-Madison
4. West Virginia University
5. Ohio University-Athens
6. Florida State University
7. University of Texas at Austin
8. University of Georgia
9. University of Colorado, Boulder
10. University of Mississippi

On the opposite end of this scale are the top 10 stone-cold sober schools:

1. Brigham Young University
2. Wheaton College
3. United States Naval Academy
4. Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering
5. Webb Institute
6. United States Coast Guard Academy
7. Calvin College
8. United States Air Force
9. Grove City College
10. Wesleyan College

The complete listing is in "The Best 357 Colleges: 2005 Edition," which also has two-page profiles on each college with information on academics, student body, campus life, admission, and financial aid.

Damn, I want to see a survey like this for Canadian universities. Everyone says Western is a party school but I don't 100% believe it. I guess I'll see this fall :O.
