Is TRANCE a dirty word?

Here in the UK when i am out and about i often meet people who take an interest in the fact that i DJ and Produce. The most common question of course is "What type of music do you play?" to which i always respond "Electronic dance music". Sometimes this is enough to satisfy their curiosity but others often enquire further "What type of dance music?" and here the problem lies.
Many years ago when trance was still underground i had no problems in proudly puffing out my chest and declaring "I play trance music" but now days i say "Trance" and then before you could blink an eye, back it up with "But not that commercial crap in the charts like - Pretty Green Eyes...... etc etc etc".
I hate the fact that i now have to launch into a detailed defence of my music before they have the chance to sneer.
Am i just paranoid (and there was never going to be a sneer in the first place!!) or have the commercial money makers damaged the reputation of our music so badly that you guys feel the same as me???

Ha ha ha , its funny you should say that. I saw oakie at Gatecrasher Summer Sound system and the first tune he played had a long build up and when the beats came in flames shot up from the front of the stage, the track was wicked and everyone was chanting Oakie, Oakie, Oakie. Unbeknown to me, my mate standing next to me started to freak out on his sweeties and told me afterwards he flipped and though he was amongst devil worshipers.
Still makes me chuckle.......

Haha that's EXACTLY what I say when my mates ask me what I'm into. I'm inclined to agree with you that Trance's reputation has been affected by those kind of artists, as far as the general public go, which is a shame. I normally just say something along the lines of "that isn't trance, that's cheesy commercial eurodance which MoS label as trance because it makes them look classier"... which normally works :p
Out of curiosity what actual arguments do you use when distinguishing between that stuff and the kind of trance you like? |

Isoterra where did you get that bad boy England flag from is it in the options???? Where are you in good old blighty????
My arguament?
I usually try to compare my style to a well known DJ - Oakie, Sasha, Tiesto etc but if they are really ignorant and no none of them then i usually just moan on about how crap the pop music is (and lets face it, it's not trance it's pop music just like Westlife and Bob the Builder) until they off and talk to someone else because im boring them. ha ha

to be honest trance seems to be on the bottom of the food chain...
everyone seems to hate on trance: house heads, dnb, techno, and etc.
i really can't blame them though; trance in my opinion is a very mundane, boring genre. i can't stand the arpeggio oscillating synths, or the cheesy drumlines. |

Erm yeah... did you think otherwise or something? :conf:
Just that I've been asked to describe trance before and get stuck... end up just recommending artists to them, normally really obscure ones ;) |
