I thought we did have a few red light cameras in 'sauga for a pilot program?

Red Light Cameras
Intersection Safety Program to Reduce Red-Light Running
Red light cameras have been installed at several intersections in Mississauga as a two-year pilot program that will test and evaluate both red light camera enforcement and stepped-up police enforcement to help reduce red light running and collisions.
These intersections are Dixie Road at Dundas Street, Dixie Road at Derry Road and Hurontario Street at Derry Road. Increased police enforcement will target Dixie Road at Eglinton Avenue, Erin Mills Parkway at Eglinton Avenue and Erin Mills Parkway at Dundas Street.
The cameras photograph vehicles that enter the intersection after the traffic signal turns red. The camera only captures the vehicle and not the driver. The fine for running a red light is $190. A violation notice is mailed to the address of the owner of the vehicle captured by the camera. If a driver is already within the intersection to complete a left turn and the signal turns red before the driver can clear the intersection, this is not considered running a red light.

Although I wasn't too happy when I got one of these in the mail for a time when I'm 100% positive I didn't go through a red light (I just don't do that, ever), I think we really need these. There have been FAR too many times when I've been trying to make a left turn and watching people (who *clearly* are the only people on the whole planet that are in a hurry to get somewhere  ) accelerate through the intersection not only when the light is yellow but even after it turns red. That is to say that the light is red before they even make it INTO the intersection. This type of behaviour is totally going to cause an accident, so I hope these people learn their lesson and drive a little more politely (not to mention legally).
I have sympathy for the ones who get clipped on an empty road at 4 AM and the light turns red about a millisecond before they CLEAR the intersection, but there's just too much bull happening on Toronto roads lately.
Now if they could just do something about the left lane hogs, multiple-lane hogs, idiots who never learned to use their signals, and wimpy drivers who go 30 below the speed limit and take 20 minutes to make their turns (somehow I have the feeling that these are all the same people)... |

Ass much as these are an absolute pain in the ass, I think it's a good idea.
There are far too many idiots that can't drive out there, let's hope it'll make this city safer! |

| im never one for cameras making decisions about law. Put real cops on patrol and ticket the drivers, not the car owners. |

Do you get points if you run with the red light cameras? (You don't with photo-radar and I don't think you do with red light cameras)
------
This is where the whole camera (radar and red light) thing is flawed:
Without the addition of points to TRUELY deter people (through increased insurance and possible loss of liscense) this is simply a cash grab.
I disagree with all gov't cash crabs. |

No points. But they don't set it up that way to go easy on people, they do it because the cameras can't prove who was driving the car. It's one of those "absolute liability" offenses (or is it strict liability?).
But unlike going a few km/h over the speed limit, what these people are doing is really dangerous. I've had so many close calls on left turns. I'd also like to see cops handling it instead of cameras, but I don't think that's very realistic... we really do need to do something about the situation. It's almost $200, which is a lot of money, so I think people will be a little more careful. |
