Why? Not time. Not because technology has advanced. There are tunes produced 10-12 years ago that are more complex than an epic trance track today, and I mean actually more complex as in the number of sounds and effects in a track. So why this change you point out here? |

The main problem I can identify is nothing to do with complexity, it's that many trance producers today don't seem to bother actually writing a melody for their tracks. A few years ago there were many producers who created wonderful melodies and backed them with simple, effective production. Nowadays, the trend seems to be to take a vaguely uplifting chord progression and slap in a bunch of pads and saws and snare rolls. The reason people say trance all sounds the same now is because... well a lot of it is the same. Of course this is only a trend and there are still lots of interesting trance tracks. |

contrary to what a lot of people are saying, trance has not become boring. there's still lots of new and interesting stuff coming out, just like five years ago. the problem is that, with the internet, we now have the opportunity to listen to about every release, whereas five years ago we weren't as 'involved' in the scene as we are now. the sets were full of surprises and tracks we didn't hear before, but now they're not since we know a huge amount of the tracks already. the more you are involved in something, the faster you'll get bored with it, which is the case here. people's tastes evolve much faster.. which is why we've seen a lot of those 'trance is dead'-threads this year.
i'm glad that Gladius put "trance bores me" instead of "trance is dead". because trance is not dead at all.. the DJ Mag top 3 wouldn't consist off trance DJ's if it was. people's tastes have just evolved. |
