Ahhh ... the old ones :)
I still listen to them as I find all the new trance stuff annoying and boring ... I have switched to Psytrance already years ago, that's the only music where I still like to check out new releases...

I still like (in no particular order):

Marc Et Claude - I Need Your Lovin' (Darkmoon Remix)
York - Reachers Of Civilisation (Rank 1 Remix)
Plastic Boy - Twixt
Mike Koglin - The Silence
Talla Vs. Taucher - Together '99

and so many more...

I may as well mention my all-time favourite track, it was done in 1997

Rodd-Y-Ler - Lifesigns :D

That remix is an insult to the original in my opinion. Halcyon is close to my favourite track of all time, and the original should have been left untouched in my opinion. 'Tis a thing of beauty! :D

Here a pretty old one:

Blue Planet Corporation - Crystal
fbgdavidson
Solange - Messages (Ferry Corsten & DJ Tiestos 'Gouryella' Mix)
Tilt - I Dream (Tilt's Resurrection Mix)
BT & Paul van Dyk - Namistai

The above were mixed on 'A Higher State of Euphoria' and I can remember borrowing a friends CD of this on an early morning flight from Paris to London. I almost wet myself when I first heard it especially 'I Dream'. Incredible.

Faithless - Drifting Away (Paradiso Mix)
Transa - Supernova
Dutch Force - Deadline
Vincent De Moor - Flyaway
Cass & Slide - Perception
BT - Flaming June
Humate - Love Stimulation
DJ Sakin & Friends - Protect Your Mind (For The Love Of A Princess) (Lange Remix)
Travel - Bulgarian
Chakra - I Am (Digweed & Muir's Bedrock Mix)
Hurley & Todd - Crazy World
Chakra - Love Shines Through
Chakra - Home
Chicane - Lost You Somewhere (Heliotropic Mix)
Tillman & Ries - Bassfly (Moogwai Mix)
Delerium - Heaven's Earth (Matt Darey Remix)
Rhythm of Live - You Put Me In Heaven With Your Touch (Lange Remix)
Quivver - She Does (Quivver Mix)

The Euphoria albums before Dave Pearce came on the scene really were sensational!

Not really. The lead synth was taken from Quench - Dreams.

I asked once and I got no answers so i'll ask again. What's the difference between epic trance in '99 and epic trance now? Anyone is allowed to answer, but there are really only about four or five people on these entire forums that I would actually listen to since they seem to have some idea of what they're talking about more than half the time.

I really don't think that it has. I think that the artists are trying to be something that they are not, but other than that, the music has progressed very little since Children came out. Producers are trying everything they can to not be trance anymore, Trance is a dirty word now. Sasha goes and invents, "Progressive," and everyone else tries to mimic that style since it's the cool thing to do, but mostly ends up producing the same .

As far as production, I don't think there is much change in that area either. Like you said, if you look at what Simon Berry was doing way back, it sounds like he spent way more time on his stuff then the kiddies do today. Is it the change from analog to digital? I don't know. Perhaps. But I doubt it. I think it's the ideas more than the technology. My only theory here is that producers are focusing more on the individual sounds of the song. The effects, the lead, the bassline, and the percussion may be perfectly crafted and EQed; but they spent no time thinking about how those sounds are going to merge and form a track. I'm not saying that people are making tracks with clashing elements, but maybe that they focus more on the parts and the production, than on the composition and song as a whole.

I would also say that trance is limited by itself. You can only do so many epic melodic breakdowns based on the exact same structure before it all starts to sound similar. I think people remember '98 and '99 as the heyday, and the songs from that era as, "Classics," simply because that sound was newer at the time, or that's when they were introduced to it. It's the nostalgia of it.

So my answer would be that it hasn't really changed since then.
