I'd love to hear what some of you Europeans have to say about this. I think it's funny yet saddening at the same time. This almost maniacal push to unify the EU into one state by a small group of zealots gets more and more interesting by the day.

EURO chief Romano Prodi last night hailed Britain’s haul of Olympic gold as a triumph — for the European Union.
And he warned our athletes will have to fly the EU flag as well as the Union Jack at Beijing in 2008.
That would mean 800m and 1500m champion Kelly Holmes and boxing sensation Amir Khan would be battling for Brussels as much as Britain.
Mr Prodi turned the Athens games into a political football, boasting that our bag of 30 medals helped the EU trounce America and China.
He said: “The Games were a huge success thanks to their unique spirit and smooth organisation but also because EU athletes did so well.
“In 2008 I hope to see the teams in Beijing carry the flag of the European Union alongside their own national flag as a symbol of our unity.
“The European Union’s sportsmen and women performed outstandingly at Athens, winning 82 gold medals and more than 280 medals in total.”
Mr Prodi a failed Italian politician, is about to step down after a dismal term as EU president.
He has infuriated critics by spelling out his vision for an EU superstate, dubbed the “Holy Romano Empire”.
Mr Prodi’s grandiose plan for a Euro Olympic squad was backed by other Eurocrats.
Commission spokesman Reijo Kemppinen claimed: “The EU swept the floor at the Olympic Games.”
German Ingo Friedrich, vice-president of the Euro Parliament, insisted medals must be listed under the EU to “foster a European identity”.
But ex-sports minister Kate Hoey blasted the Prodi plan.
“Athletes feel very strong emotions when they represent their own country at the Olympics.
“We saw Amir Khan and other medal-winners kissing or crying into the Union Jack and Kelly Holmes was proud to be picked to parade the flag in the closing ceremony.
“Can anyone imagine them feeling that way about the EU banner?”
[Medal table
(As Brussels sees it)
Europe: 82 golds

And the Soviet Unions trumped them.

People in Britain would give up tea & biscuits before we competed alongside France & Germany in the olympics, especially France, lol.
Message to the EU; We are happy with the curvature of our bananas, we are happy to call margerine margerine, and we'd be happier coming bottom of the medals table in the olypics than we would coming top alongside you bunch of pansies, so JUST STOP IT.

| I'm sure the US would do damn well in the medal count too if the Olympic Committee allowed us 14 more participants in every event. Idiot Prodi. |

| I can't see a single EU banner ever, just because like was noted in the article every country has its own identity and history and with this comes pride of one's country which is the whole point of the olympics. The EU has no real history, it would be like the United States, Canada, Mexico, and South American countries coming together and calling ourselves the American Union... |

It would be more like.. The Continents Competition ( Into the WORLDS GEOGRAPHY AND EYES.. there is no South and North America.. is AMERICA as a whole ).. So, having that in mind.. America together.. would be interesting. lol.. thats just sick though. |

Yes, I pretty much agree with this statement. What I don't get, however, is why are you american nationalists so opposed to EU functioning as a single entity. The individual contenders, regardless of what they say, compete solely for themselves. Yes, they do wave their national flags around, but if you take a look at their names and nationalities, you would see that very few of them are authentic citizens of the countries under whose banners they are competing. This is especially true for France and UK.
PS. Margarine was always called margarine, never margerine, and it was certainly not an EU regulation that interfered in the local language customs and ordered "margerine" to be called margarine. |

haha hilarious meh.. i think its going to be scary for the world when africa finally finds some funding for its athletes. i mean.. black people being genetically superior and all. i predict the medal count in 2100 being something like this:
africa 200 medals
China 120 medals (for ping pong and like that no one else plays, slash sports where a two foot centre of gravity is important)
others 10 medals (for countries with immigrated blacks and chinese)
although i heard white people have an advantage in swimming. theres something in the feet of black people that puts them at a disadvantage |
