holy , I am ing stunned. I was only minutes behind you. I got stuck about 5 kms behind that accident. We were approaching the rest stop just as traffic started to slow, and had planned on getting off the highway b/c I needed the washroom.

We were talking to a trucker who heard from other truckers ahead through his radio that three people were dead, highway closed. So we sat on the grass, observing how fast traffic was moving and wondering if we should just camp out at the rest stop.

It took us about 2 hours to get through to highway 675 along the water and start moving again. As we drove along the overpass over the 401 (which was completely closed) I couldn't get over the eerie feeling of knowing that just down there, people had died...you take the highway and don't think about it as anything else but just road, so it was bothering me just imagining the scene not too far from us.

traffic accidents are so random, so quick, so unexpected. I tried not to wonder "why them, and not us?" as we drove by.

I actually asked my friend, "what would you do if you were two cars behind that when it happened?" and you were right behind. that is so weird.

gah. so depressing. so scary. :(

i don't need a lesson like that to motivate me to wear my seatbelt

Tou chay - but his brother obviously needed the lesson to motivate him. :( Maybe there were other people there not wearing their seatbelt.. and they all learned a valuable lesson that day.
I'll admit there's a lot of times I don't wear my seatbelt either. I don't know why!.. and I know it's not good. I actually got a seatbelt ticket a few months ago.

Actually that just reminded me. I got into an accident about 4 years ago on the DVP (eglington area) - just after a blizzard. Some idiot in a civic was reversing in the left lane (the lane we were in), because he skided out. It happenned around a bend which explains why we didn't see him until it was too late. Obviously we rammed into him, and did donuts over the other 3 lanes of traffic. This whole time I wasn't wearing my seatbelt. My friends car was totalled, airbags were out, and we walked away w/ bruises. I was very lucky - and you'd think I would have learned my lesson :( I'm a dumbass. Needless to say I celebrated life the next day at Guvernment :eyes:
We were so lucky no other cars hit us.

A part of me truly believes that everything happens for a reason, and when it's your time to go, it's your time to go. Miracles happen every day..unfortunately a miracle didn't happen for those young girls.

It's horrible you had to witness someone dying...Nobody should have to witness something so traumatizing.

I would like to relate an experience as well. When I was younger... bout 8 years old... My friend and I had decided to take a walk down to the general store in the village I used to live in. Well on the way we had to cross an intersection that was not a very busy road however there was a pedestrian crosswalk with full traffic lights. We continued across the street but before we could finish my friend had heard a car coming that I had not. Had my friend stopped in his tracks he would be here insted of myself, but selflessly he shoved me out of harms way and endangered his own life. When the driver stuck him he swerved out of control and struck a wall. The same wall that my friend had been thrown into from the impact of the crash. My friend being pinned at the upper abdomen between the bloodsoaked chrome bumper and the large masonry retaining wall. After moving the vehicle to free my friend. I held him as we waited for the ambulance. Looking at him staring at his wounds... his lower body was barely attached... internal organs were beginning to exit his chest. I held him as he died... He was only 8 years old as well. Later the police reported that the driver had consumed an entire bottle of rum while driving along that road. the driver attempted to justify it with "the road is rarely travelled so I thought it would be okay"

To this day I still have nightmares about that day.
So please, don't drive impared.
