According to James Zabiela it is in this excerpt of an interview on resident advisor!
I was at this party at Blast and the vibe was amazing (beats Toronto these days). It was small but crazy and the music was amazing. Way to go Blast! Sources tell me he's back at Blast in Nov with Luke Fair for the simple reason that he had such a good time last time.
ROAD TRIP!!!
| quote: | . RA: So where have you mostly been over the past year?
JZ: Actually, I’ve been in America a bit – quite a few two-week tours, at least every couple of months. I’ve just come back from Canada – I did my first tour of Canada. I’ve been to Toronto a couple of times and Montreal once, but I went to Vancouver this time and I also went to Windsor, which I’m told in the armpit of Canada. But I actually thought it was really good. In fact, it was the best gig out of all of the gigs.

what place doesn't own Scarborough? :toothless
meh, whatever...some DJs think Guv and Toronto is the too. Andy Jarrod (who rocked last time he was here):
If you had to pick two places to play your last set, spin your last tune if you will, where would it be and why?
Mmm... Tricky one that. There are loads of places that I haven't played yet and would really love to. But of the places I've played so far I'd probably go for Q Bar in Melbourne and Guvernment in Toronto. Q is ultra cool and very intimate. Only about 300 people but it feels like your playing in your living room to a load of mates. The sound system and booth are second to none at its always ing great. Aussie legends and dear friends Kasey Taylor and Sean Quinn have built the night up from nothing over the last few years. Guvernment is Toronto's premier club. 3.000 people and a Phazon sound system that kicks you in the stomach as soon as you walk in. The booth is 30 feet above the dance floor and it's amazing to look out across the entire club.

Tell James he's about 4 yrs late on that anaolgy.
When the scene exploded in the late 90's, Windsor did quite well. My friend Peter owned the Amsterdam, which was a great little lounge with a big black backroom, and Richie, Sven, and most of the Detroit elite would simply chill there.. Windsor was quite superior to Detriot @ the time in many ways.. mainly due to the cops being ahead of crackingdown there then here.
Unfortunately the cops caught up on our side of the border and it's been pretty desolate ever since. |

The scene is Windsor has never been good... and saying that some good dj's used to hang out there doesn't really mean much. Where else are they going to hang out? Peppers? Other than Amsterdam and the Velvet room, there were no other lounges.
I used to talk to Hawtin a number of times at platinum, but it doesn't make it a great club. It had a little run, but like most things in Windsor it fell apart as a result of external forces (eg. bikers).
The problem with the Detroit scene has always been its curfew. And living next to Windsor with the different drinking ages doesn't help. Windsor gets overrun every night with annoying Americans that have no respect for the country they're in.

I love how you derive your analogy that Windsor might be the party capital of Canada based on that quote you pulled from RA. What a joke.
For one thing, there couldn't have been much more than 100 people at that club. And while the vibe was good, it wasn't anything to write home about. I can understand why he would have liked it though... it was a small environment, and the booth is setup right in front of the crowd, so you can interact more and see that the crowd is enjoying the music.
How often does a name as big as Zabiela come to a ty town like Windsor? Almost never. You would think if Windsor was such a "party town" that they could at least fill the place. Especially with Detroit next door.
