I think you're right to start with vocal tracks. You might think of playing some good remixes of recognizable mainstream tracks,a number of which have been mentioned.

A few other suggestions that come immediately to mind:

- The Sermon: Ron Carroll

- Red Pill, Blue Pill: Junkie XL

- We Want Your Soul: Adam Freeland

- Legacy vs Rez (Infusion vs Underworld, Traiano Mix)

I suggest house music first. Not prog though.

Even my mum likes deep house - everything but the girl, Lazy dog, Ben Watts solo compilations...or work them in with a St Germain lounge CD which will have more commercial stuff on it, like Moby or whatever.

Good call on the EBTG there Skipper!
I thought I was the only one that liked their newer stuff :p

The CD Everything But The Girl - Temperamental (1999) is a little older but totally a great intro to the EDM scene.

I'd also suggest anything by BT or Moby. Their music is soft and fluffy so it won't grind against their chalkboard ears. ;)

The biggest challenge isn't really the music but the openness of the people listening.
If there is already an expectation on their part because of mass media or a bad experience, the last thing you want is to give them an excuse to prove them right.

Happy converting!

A few of my coworkers really liked the Gabriel & Dresden EM when I was playing it there. It just happened to be on, I wasn't trying to explain the scene to them or anything.

I'd say the problem is 50% closed-mindedness of others, and 50% snobbiness of the people trying to convert them. The point is, you shouldn't be trying to convert them. Just play your and show your enthusiasm about it if they ask questions (but don't talk in EDM geekspeak). That's all there is to it - if they like it, cool, if they don't, their loss.

The problem with a lot of people who ask these questions is that they try to get people into the "elite" kind of EDM - but we seem to forget that this wasn't what we started out with either. I keep in touch with my roots - I listen to older, softer, sometimes cheesier tunes without shame and I find that they sit well with a wide audience.

Best responses I've got depend on what type of music they're already into. If they like:

Soft rock or classical - fluff like Dreamland (Robert Miles), the G&D Essential Mix, or any of the Hybrid CDs (R&AP is better for rock fans because of all the rock remixes). Classic or deep house like Daft Punk, Roger Sanchez or the Lazy Dog mixes (good call Sarah) tend to be mainstream crowd pleasers too.

Hard rock or heavy metal - Prodigy, Crystal Method, Chemical Brothers, or Infected Mushroom (lest we forget that one of their members used to be in a thrash metal band, so it shouldn't be a surprise).

Rap or R&B - Anything jungle, style depends on the audience. Dieselboy appeals to some people, some of the older by Aphrodite (like Urban Jungle), or Goldie. House music from Fatboy Slim and AVH also goes.

If they're into any kind of jazz, there's a lot of EDM out there you can play for 'em. There's atmospheric and/or jazzy D'n'B (LTJ Bukem, or the DJ SS Jazz 'n Bass sets), or jazzy breaks (i.e. DJ Food). EZ Rollers also do some very funky tunes - my next-door neighbour in Rez once came over to talk about it 'cause she thought the track sounded like porn music. :p

Lots of folks also like Moby and Portishead even though I could never get into either of them. I guess Tiesto seems to be a crowd pleaser too. I personally wouldn't recommend it though.
