Actually you don't have to pay your HECS while you're at uni. You don't have to pay until you have a job and are earning >$30,000 a year or something like that.
Adnan1999'ing
yes that is if you defer HECS, which means you will be paying it off with Interest.

Adnan we both would pay her hecs if it was abolished. University students protest hecs going up constantly and it really frustrates me.

Adnan I want to be a a professional dj/producer eventually, the government in no way offers me any assistance to do so, the tax you will eventually pay does not aid me to do so. There is no system where my equipment is paid for unitl i earn money from my chosen vocation. To do the work I "want" to do, i must save from work i hate!! See where I'm getting?

I really don't mind being a part of the bigger picture with tax etc but I hate it when students scream murder when they find out less of my tax money is supporting them when it's not even supporting me.

Imagine if i asked you to buy me a couple of records every week then you stop and i say "thats not fair"!! Would that piss you off? What if i than held a protest blocking your public transport home after a long day of work because of it? Trust me, it is really annoying..

I'm sympathetic to student life,as I said i share in one, If university offered a course that suited my chosen career path i would do it. But Understand you choose University so that you may work in a field of your choice, have better employment prospects or for personal interest, We don't make you, so why would you have a "right" to complain to those of us paying a load in tax, when hecs changes. ( nothiing personal mate, just saying in general)

I don't want to get into a debate about what tax should be spent on, because that is not my point, i'm just discussing hecs.

actually all HECS debts are interest free, the only reason you sometimes have to pay more than the original cost of your course is because at the beginning of each financial year your HECS debt is indexed such that it maintains a realistic value in relation to the current cost of living.

for those interested, it went up 2.4% in 2003, and 2.4% again in 2004

What you said is all well and grand.

But, think about this. -
According to the principles of a democracy the taxpayer's money should be spent on the common good - education and the right to eduation is one of those common goods. Sure you may not need HECS because you have chosen a different career in life, but the fact of the matter is you do not represent the majority. Also, do you not rely on people who are university graduates? Who do you think is responsible for the infastructure, management and other day to day things you take for granted. Do you think by lowering tertiary standards by privatising university education, completely will improve our quality of life by the few extra dollars a week you will get in the form of a tax cut? - in the long-term, no.

Furthermore I think there are more "taxpayers" out there who have, or plan to complete tertiary education than people seeking other careers - i.e dj-ing (current statistics show that 70% of high school students seek to enter tertiary institutions - according the the Bureau of Statistics). Keep in mind, not all of these students, can afford full-fee tertiary education even by working. So what your saying is to them "tough luck, you cannot complete your tertiary studies".

So if in a democracy the tax collected should represent the "majority" of society then the majority being tertiary education students (be it TAFE or University) - should entail in HECS remaining for the betterment of the 'majority' of society, not for Howard's mounting post-iraq reconstruction bills.

I reckon in a civilised country education is a right, not a privelidge.
Interest rates are gunna go up in the next 4 years no matter what.

Latham aint bright
Howard lies flat out to your face!
The greens have no show, I find their E stance quite funny
the democrats are weak

no one wins a political debate...

Im gunna make my vote count - donkey vote
Adnan1999'ing
^ agreed
gumble
my view on education;

its much more than a personal choice, its for the good of the country.
the more educated people we have, the more the nation can progress, the more overall benefits we all receive. newer technologies, discoveries, social schemes etc all aid the country in the long run.

i think the government should contribute lots more to the educational institutes (well universities in particular - tafe doesnt do much cept get a job for yourself).

and yer, uni isnt all about a job either, its about pursuit of knowledge and understanding. and anyway, i dont know why im been nice to uni atm, cos its not been nice to me. stuck home on a sat doing about 4 things all due in the next few days. and i dont know how to use excel :/ and im paying for this. pants.
Adnan1999'ing
finally, people talking some sense around here!! well said gumble.
couldn't have put it any better.

This is just one of the examples why the liberals do not understand what is good for the country in the long-run.

gumble
