| I've always had a problem with people burning any country's flag. By burning the flag, you are burning everything, the country stands for and I view it as an extreme insult to that country. |

I do remember something about French flags on fire. Don't know if it happen for certain though. probably was some comical comment.
Burning a flag is just an act of provocation or disapporval of whatever a country is doing. Both sides are stupid: one for thinking that burning a flag would cause any type of response or make any type of difference, and the other for responding feeling insulted, angered and so on for watching the flag of your country hugged by flames. If there was really respect for a flag, we would salute it every time we saw it. Not just when we were told to. |

im pretty sure that people that have been arrested for burning the flag in protest of something have been taken it to court and won.
and the proper way to dispose of a flag that has been "retired" is to burn it i believe...
the thing that is a crime is desecrating the flag, which has also come under scrutiny in the courts. |

Few reasons.
It is a symbolic gesture of one's country.
Did you see after 9/11 happened flags were draped on all the major buildings?
During the olympics the athletes cover themselves in their flags and sing while their flag is raised?
We take pride in the flag, hence, our national anthem talks about our flag in detail, we have flag day here in the states, we have a pledge of aliegence to the flag, etc.
I don't know about other countries but it does actually mean quite a bit here. |

yes, here there was recently some kind of "fashion" to put flags on every house to "support portugal in euro2004 and the olympics" and everyone was a portugal fanatic and whatever. personally i'm absolutely sick of exagerated patriotism and people making a big deal out of national symbols like the flag. we're all humans, why take such pride in the divisions between humans such as nations? anyway i realise that burning flags is a bit of an offense, but it's not like it gets hurt and dies with an horrible pain in flames. you have the right to care, but personally i'd much rather care for things that matter over flags. |
