I don't think you can blame this one strictly on Bush...he said he would support it....oh wait yes you can...you blame him for everything already except sliced bread...my bad.
When will they figure out that people kill people (along with natural disasters and disease and...)... You know...if we ban people...we really wouldn't this problem anymore. :D :D :D
...and yes, I was for continuing the ban...who needs an assault rifle anyway... |

Well, he's got the leadership in America, I have not seen any effort from he's side to continue the ban, just words. |

He made an executive decision to do nothing (just like b4 9/11). |

Just because he's from Texas doesn't mean he has connections at every school in the state!
FYI, John Kerry's dad went to Yale too. Why doesn't anybody give him riding daddy's coattails? |

sorry, it was just kinda humorous considering he governed the state years later. i do give the man props for "getting in" to harvard business school...however, harvard must have really blown chunks back in his day because his failed business ventures and the fact that he didnt know social security was a govt program just beats me.
and as far as kerry is concerned, i hear he didnt get too great of a gpa either (not too far above bush's 1.68 gpa). no doubt he also has a silver spoon up his arse...as do the majority of high powered politicians. |

humorous that A&M has acceptence standards? or humorous you think that
what you "heard" about someone pulling strings to get him in the Guard equates to someone pulling strings to get him into law school?
explain.
and another thing, do you realize that EVERYONE involved in ANY Texas oil venture in the 70's and early 80's got the rug pulled out from under them by the Saudis back then? do you remember the oil crisis?
do you realize that he managed to make millions despite his setbacks.
and who said he didn't know what Social Security was? i've heard this before but i thought it was someone else. |

MmmmmMmmMmM Only difference is that, the Bush were very well involved with the majority of the Saudis doing buisness ( the Bin Ladens, as well some that have actually financed Osama Bin Laden's Jihad.. so the following question arises...
Given their business relationships with Saudis charged with financing Osama bin Laden's jihad, have the House of Bush's business interests compromised America's war on terror? |

You shouldn't have even posted this non-sense. The law makers are allowing the ban to pass since there were so many loopholes in it in the first place. The ban allowed for gun makers to redesign/rename weapons that were on the list, and still sell them.
The Colt Ar-15 is a perfect example. It is a copy of the M-16. It uses the same ammo and has the same rate of fire as the M-16 and was completly legal to own under the ban.
The ban also made it so the largest new clip you could have in a pistol was 10 rounds. Under the grandfater clause you could still buy larger clips. I had a budy that was looking for a 30 round clip for his Glock. As long as he could prove it was made before the ban, it was totally legal to have it.
The ban was originally created by Clinton to win votes. It made no sense at all. If criminals want the weapons they are going to get them no matter what. There are countries in Africa that sell AK-47's on the black market for $5 a piece, so please explain to me how the ban stopped terrorists from obtaining assult weapons.
The only problem I have with the ban expiring is that at the moment, no one has plans to come up with a better one. |

You make some good points, but the ban was even a bigger piece of bull than that. You know what it banned? Jack ! That's right. Jack ! It shocks me that people here can't take two seconds to actually read what the AWB actually did. Sorry for not arriving sooner to stem the tide of poorly-researched rhetoric.
Quick - raise your hand if you think this means that you can get automatic weapons now. WRONG! You haven't been able to own an automatic weapon in the USA since 1932 without some serious cash and background checks. That hasn't changed. If you want a full-auto weapon, it can take as long as three years, multiple background checks, and between $200 and $500 in government fees, not to mention that the ATF checks up on you from time to time in person. I would say at least half of the editorials that I read today think this means you can buy a full-auto weapon. So much for journalists doing their research.
Now, I've heard a lot of talk about AK-47's today. You could by a 30-round clip and a semi-auto AK-47 before the ban. You could buy one with a 30-round clip after the ban. I should know - I have one that I bought 3 years ago with 6 30-round clips. The only thing that the AWB did was prevent new production or importation of those parts. So in essence, all the AWB did was make my gun more unsafe, because I couldn't get current imported replacement parts for it.
You know what the AWB banned on my AK-47? A freaking bayonet lug! That's right! I couldn't put a bayonet lug on my AK because of the ban. Apparently, the legislators who wrote the bill were interested in stopping the increasing rate of drive-by bayonettings.
So, in summary. The AWB has NOTHING to do with a fully automatic weapon. And it has almost nothing to do with any piece of hardware that can cause harm to someone. The AWB was window dressing to make some people feel good about themselves. You can still only own a gun that fires one shot per one pull of the trigger. All the ban did was hinder law-abiding gun owners from getting new pieces of hardware for their firearms. |

I haven't posted any Boortz in a while, but this thread tied in with some of his comments today.

| quote: | THE ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN
Do you notice the media panic? The assault weapons ban expires at midnight tonight! By tomorrow morning our streets will be packed with roving gangs carrying machine guns.
Two things. First ... these so-called "assault weapons" have played a very minor role in the American crime picture over the years. There were a few incidents in California involving some rather ugly semi-automatic weapons and Barbara Boxer went nuts. And that brings us to our second point. Do you know how the various weapons listed in the soon-to-expire ban were chosen? Barbara Boxer and some staffers got their hands on a weapons catalogue and decided which weapons looked the most dangerous. These were the weapons ultimately banned. The decision was based on cosmetics.
Legislation written the way this law was written deserves to die. |
