I'm thinking about going to a fire academy next year. Not sure if i should get an EMT certificate first though.
Btw, i just changed my plans from getting a degree in fire science to go straight to an academy. |

I'm a volunteer firefighter with the Roslyn Rescue fire department. Have been a firefighter for almost a year and a half now. Great thing, it is. :)
Well speak of the devil! The folks that took the EMT-B course on the 19th of August received their certificates of completion today (If they passed, that is). Here's mine. :D

| i've got news for everyone that glorifies firemen...sure there are one in a million situations when they actually have to risk their lives, but most of the time all they do is respond to traffic accidents so they get the hours on the big red truck so they can justify the tax money they eat up paying for them. the rest of the time they take turns running to the store for food. |

Let me give you some advice. I was going to be a firefighter but 2 knee surgeries blew it for me. I have an A.S. in fire science from L.A. Valley College. I was also an EMT. Do you live in Southern, CA? Your best chance of becoming a firefighter is to become a paramedic. To be a paramedic, you have to be an EMT first. To become the paramedic you're going to have to work for one of those ambulance companies as an EMT for a while. Companies like A.M.R., Schaffer, etc.
L.A. City is hiring on and off. Every month or so they change their minds. Take their basic written test. See if you can get on their list. The more "things" you have, the more your chances. By "things" I mean: Paramedic-Degree-EMT-Firefighter 1. You can get your firefighter 1 by attending a private academy. Make sure you're in great physical shape.
It's going to take a while, you don't become a firefighter overnight. Remember there are 1000's of people out there who want the job also.
Good Luck,

The person has to obtain EMT-B and EMT-CC levels rankings before being able to become a Paramedic. All three require going to special courses and passing state exams.
Good luck. :) |

Is EMT-CC a national ranking?
Edit: No, it's not a national ranking. So in California it's still just an EMT-B requirement. |

That would be the easiest way to do it. Where do you live? |

I live in Glendale, but i'm attending Pasadena Community College right now, taking fire technology classes to earn a certificate.
So I suppose after taking EMT classes and Fire classes i try out for paramedic and then becoming a FF is much easier?
It must suck ass dude to earn a degree and it all up by messing up your shins, what a waste of time... |
