Why are Americans so fond of Top100/massive lists?

it occured to me some time ago that most people who start threads like "lets compile another list of the top10/most influential/biggest/most emotional tracks/DJs" are started by americans. you also seem to be really concerned with the top 100. whilst i dont want to get into an ideological debate about UK vs. US, id like to know whether americans are really that competitive and fussed about the position they occupy in relation to others

well it's always interesting for me to see those, as i'd like to see some good tracks posted that i haven't heard before...

then again, i prefer to just listen to music myself and decide for myself whether i like it or not. i feel its better that way but some people are more interested in what other people like so yeah. :)

I think the american's are just looking for a whole new list of MP3 to download, simple as that.

don't think the americans are more focued on top lists than other nations.. just seems so cuz the most users are from the usa I guess..

I've never looked at a Top 100 list in my life, with intent anyway, too much sources out there to get music ( a lot of B.S. usually) so I hunt the TA forums for good reccomended tunes:D

i am an american, and i do look at the top lists, whenever it is posted .. i don't get why you have to single out americans . everyone makes lists . sometimes people are bored, and just make a list out of curiosity to compare with their other fellow mates here. others, as one stated before, look for more "sources" to download .

but you don't have to single out americans. everyone does it.

So they can check who everybody loves so they can love him/her too :toothless

i dont think it has jack to do with being american or with nationalities at all.. the dude behind the top 100 sticky is british for example. i'm a bit of a chart/top lists freak myself, it's a fun way of comparing music and reminding yourself of previously forgotten tracks

I'm an Englishman living in America - With regards to their preoccupation with Top Ranked lists I don't think its just an American trait.

Granted, Americans are a very competitive nation and being the best/greatest at something is something that seems to be instilled in them at birth. I don't see it as a negative thing however, thats half the reason why they dominated the olympics from start to finish.

Stereotyping Americans as the ones who start Top Lists is kind of silly. DJ magazine is an English publication - and surely they do the biggest Ranking list every year. Started by us Brits - joined by the world. Go figure
