Not my top DJs, but best sets I've heard this year...
1. Ferry Corsten - Feb 20, 2004 - Ten15. A sheduled 3 hour set turned into 4 1/2. Floor was as active as I had seen in quite a long time and still going absolutely nuts at 5:30am. His wife was falling asleep in the booth though so I think he stopped just for her. Kinda cute. :) Ferry described the crowd as "ing insane."
2. TIE: Armin van Buuren - April 2, 2004 - Ten15. A ing amazing 5+ hour set. And that's all I really have to say about that. I can't believe he just stopped a little past 4am. I was really frustrated about that because the floor was still jumping, no security stopped him, etc....he just turned around, had a few words with someone from Spundae, then played one final track and stopped...at like 4:20am. I know he still played over 5 hours, but I wanted more and he still had a nice stack of records he hadn't used yet!
2. TIE: Marco V - May 30, 2004 - Ten15. Spundae's Memorial Day weekend party. Marco V came on at 2am or 3am, I forget....and well, ing blew up!!!! Floor was still packed at 6am. Was insane! insane! When he was forced to stop at 6am, the floor was still as packed as it was during Ferry in February when he stopped.
2. TIE: Markus Schulz - September 18, 2004 - Henry Fonda Theatre. Can't describe it in words. He plays his own style when it comes to playing the music he does. No other DJs plays sets like he does...the mixture. Markus is like a Ferry Corsten or a G&D when it comes to their sets...they play their own unique style that no other really does.
2. TIE: Sasha - July 2nd, 2004 - Mezzanine. I think Sasha could be alone at #2 if I wasn't basically forced to base this ranking off the last two hours of his set...cause his first 90 minutes or whatever was lacking something....but the last 90 minutes - 2 hours! Best prog set I've heard in a long, long, long time!! I was blown away by his album, and his set was even better!!
6. TIE: Johan Gielen - June 19, 2004 - Circus. I hadn't been a fan of Johan for quite some time....I thought he had gotten a bit boring. But OH MY FECKING GIIZZOOODDD, he blew me AWAY this night. WOWOWOWOWOW. After that night, I bugged everyone I knew here to book him...and my wish has come true. He'll be at Ten15 on October 22nd!!!!!!!!!!!
6. TIE: Gabriel & Dresden - September 5, 2004 - Mezzanine. OK, I am sure many of you are wondering how the a G&D set can be one of the best sets I've heard this year considering I'm out like ALL THE TIME. When I give G&D this slot, I am being critical of their mixing, programming, etc...and not just being a fanboy. I have said I have really enjoyed all their previous shows when I speak of them, but at the same time I realize that I was there with the intention to simply have a lot of fun, and not be critical. Going into this night, I learned that they were going to start using a new style which pretty much makes them a live act. Dave on the knobs and Josh working with Ableton live...then doing all this at the same time. So of course, I was going to pay attention to see how they did with it. And well, simply put, it was excellent. Mixing, programming, etc all top-notch. No forced G&D tracks slapped in there. They played what needed to be played and what should have been played during the set. Even those who had been critical on them in their past shows were very, very impressed this night. I just hope this night wasn't a fluke. :)
8. John '00' Fleming - May 15, 2004 - Circus. I love J00F...he brought it this night. I danced my ass off, went nuts, etc...was sad for the night to end. What he plays can only be enjoyed in a club and not properly over the radio or via mp3, etc. I hope he comes back to SF sometime soon!
9. John Digweed - September 3, 2004 - Mezzanine. His set was amazing but by the time he get really pumping I was pretty much out of the zone for the night and just enjoy insane part of his set instead of going nuts. If he didn't start of so slow, I think this would be like tied for second. :)
10. Too many to list tied here. :) |

I was there for those. Hehe. Those were awesome sets. That Johan Gielen night...I loved DJ Rap's opening set. And for '00', I loved James Holden's opening set. Hehe. Those opening sets contributed to how awesome those nights were I thought. |

Usually it's the people you are with and the music that is played whether or not you have a good time and are memorable.
My best set was Sasha/PVD 2001/2002 NYE in Lost Angeles at Giant
I would have to agree though with Markus #2 9-18
that was some good stuff. I saw him in Miami and it was nothing compared to LA.
Hopefully they keep it up for Vegas in 2 weeks. :)
Who's sending the Email for Sushi with Armin and Markus?

we can name you which live set we have heard the song in, and which cd number and track it is on in our collection. But TL, we can never think of the names of the songs. |

WOW!!! OMG....WOW!!! :eyes:
This last Saturday was filled with 7 hours of the most beautiful, uplifting, dance your ass off Trance! :eyespop:
I was completely blow away by Markus' set! When he dropped the mix of Oceanlab's- Satellite and Rank 1- Air Wave I lost it. *poof* into my own little trance world. Just me and the music. I could not stop dancing or smiling. This was the first time I saw Markus and he easily became one of my top five favorites.
At 1:30 Markus was done and AVB took over. For some reason every time I have seen AVB there are always rude pushy crazy bitches that want to start a fight. Wanting to get a little bit closer to him with out a care in the world that someone else was there all ready :x After a few pushing matches it was time to enjoy AVB set.
:eyes: AVB was once again Fantastic and Fun! He has never disappointed me since I started seeing his shows.
About an hour into his set I saw a window of opportunity to walk to the side and sneak back stage. ;) Once back there was more room to dance. It was also the perfect opportunity to grab a quick pict with Markus. He is a very cool down to earth person btw. He told me I inspired him that night... *blushing* And those blue eyes of his.... :drool
After awhile more people caught on that they could sneak back stage too and it became crazy. Security started kicking everyone out with out wrist bands. I did a little dodging and got to stay. Then I saw my friend John get on the speakers and dance. He looked like he was having a Great time.
That gave me the inspiration to do the same thing. At Circus I always wanted to get on the table and dance but never did. So this time I said screw it I only live once! :twisted
After awhile I was told to get down since I was moving the turntables too much :oops
I had such a Great time on Saturday! And I saw many people in the crowd doing the same. I Loved every minute of it and loved every track that was dropped. I was and still am Super Duper happy!!! :gsmile:
A Big Thank you goes out to Spundae for putting 2 Great DJ's under one roof for one unforgettable evening!
Can some one Please bring Markus back to LA soon... pretty please! |

for those TA who dont globalgirl, she is Markus's wife.
thx globalgirl and Markus.
here is my review:
for some reasons, i have not yet missed Avb's apperances in LA since the first in Mayan hosted by Puresound, so it was my 6th time (including Vegas 2003) seeing Armin. i would have not going to see Armin's this time, but i would have missed Markus tho!!:)
honestly, i am kinda of bored of avb's style of music. the first 2 hours of avb was probably the best i have seen, but the last 2hours of avb (4:30-5:15) was probably the WORST MUSIC( at least the track selection) that i ever heard..seriously it was so ing bad plus the speaker system was so ing loud and out the tone, i had to leave the place with my friends...i felt bad that my friends had to stay with me for so long! i also felt awful that i couldnt stay til the end to meet with the rest of
TA's and also chat with avb!
What was Armin thinking!!?? toward til the end, everytime that i thought he is done, he putted on another same monotonouns beats of techno track, arrrrrrgg!
seriously, if he could erased the last 90 mins of music, it would have been easily one of the best nite of music!!!
now on to Markus...he is my favorite DJ now next to Sasha! his music is so refreshing...it was really hard to describe it....the global dj broadcast sunrise set(05-30-2004)is still my favorite liveset so far..Markus.....plz come back soon!
his tracks are so very familar, but i could only remember fews...
Here are the tracklist that i can remember:
Markus Schulz
Nikola Gala-Swing to Harmony
Burned with Desire[ dunno which remix]
White room-White room
Thrillseeker-Synaestheia[Ferry corsten remix]
Rank 1- Breathing
Did he play a version of Andain-Beautiful things?
------------------------------------------
AvB
Phantom Manor
Sasha-Wavy Gravy ( am i the only one heard this one) ! this was sooooo good!
Blue Fear...remake 2004
yet another day vs urban train
White room- white room (diff version than MS played)
Electric eclipse-push?
Avb vs Mike- pound......and lots of M.I.K.E.'s productions
Filterheadz-Yimanya
Evanescene-hello?
------------------------------------------
big shout to tranceseeker, dave t, karen, and sweetcandy...
michelle, you are a crazy girl... i cant imagine that you can dance all nite long:p
sorry i missed some of you TAs...the speaker was pretty loud that forced me to stayed in the back of the packs:mad: Let's have TA party soon! |
