He is respected in the rap community along the likes of 2pac and BIG. That is the difference my friend between GUNIT! and Nas. I mean sure i bet 50 cent was a grimey nig back in the day, got popped 9 times but look at his size man. It's all image to sell records...look i got shot now i'm street credible argh argh, when fact is i spend most of my mornings in the gym lifting weights and sipping evian, to further boost my thug image. |

REALLY, I mean, PLEASE, go back in time, WRITE, more tracks than I have, GAIN knowledge of that which you speak, become a B-BOY like I was in 1982, DEFEND hip hop as a whole like I have been for so many, many, MANY years, get into the very CULTURE itSELF, because my experience is FACT rather that opinion. When people speak of hip hop, they speak of ME. When "real heads" think hip hop, they think of individuals like myself. LEARN from other people, like myself what the foundation of rap was back in the day. I very seriously doubt you wore parachute pants and carried a cardboard to school like MYSELF. I was at the concerts, I wrote rhymes, I taught myself how to scratch, watched the 1st YO MTV Raps, learned from other MCs, etc etc etc.
Read what I wrote here and don'tever think I am talking out of my ass as far as a genre I grew up with, and help grow. I'm a living dictionar-Y of rap histor-Y.
As far as opinions go, sure, everybody has theirs. Your comparing the new jacks like LeBrown James to established champs like Air Jordan.

Who considers this? The media? Because out of all of the people listing "underground" stuff have made almost no mention of Nas. If the media is who considers him to be great, doesn't that make him commercial too? :conf: :conf: |

he's not all that commercial IMO. he has released a bunch of singles and videos and they've never been good in the public eye. i mean, they never last on TRL, which defines mainstream ....
also, i've taken wrong turns many a time and ended up in the ghetto more than once, lol, and you never hear guys rollin to fiddy, but you hear nas commin out of their speakers a lot.... not that that has anything to do with anything:p |

but to say that nas is considered in the top 5 is a biased comment. that's all i was pointing out. Everyone has different tastes, and different fav. artists....
I can see the retort (from someone, no one in particular) "well, everyone who likes rap considers him to be one of the best." I like rap (not as much as I once did), and he might be in my top 20. Prolly not, TBH. *shrug*
I think the whole argument is useless. Some people just like different things. I accept that some people like Nas, even though I , personally, do not. I bet half the hip-hop heads don't like what I like, and I, frankly, don't give a crap. |

The only point that I am trying to make here is that it bothers me when people trash certain songs just because it’s commercial, or just because maybe the lyrical content isn’t very deep w/ a lot of meaning, and ignore the actual music behind the lyrics. Music is an escape from reality, and for me, it doesn’t ALWAYS have to mean something or have these killer lyrics that I need a dictionary for to understand. I referred to that as “mindless hip hop” in another thread, and personally, I love that stuff just as much as I love the deeper, more underground style too, especially when I’m at a club and in the mood to dance. I agree, that the lyrics in hip hop get old, but I guess that is what defines hip hop these days. All these ghetto thugs made it off the streets and have nothing better to rap about but , “I’m hot, you’re not, I have money, you don’t” bla bla...yea, it does get old..but as much as I appreciate a great story and rhymes in a rap/hip hop song, I gotta be honest, it’s the beat and melody that grabs my attention. I agree with the thread starter about the Lloyd Banks, G-Unit, 50 cent stuff...I LOVE that kind of sound, it’s very raw, but at the same time, I also agree about 50’s whole image being a joke. it's just that the only thing that I was arguing is that Nas is guilty of the same image, and the same lyrical content, just maybe a bit more creative (according to most of you in here bc of your opinions). yea, Nas been in the game longer, so he deserves more respect, but I mean c’mon,THEY ALL rap about being bad asses and having money and basically it's just a big talking marathon (I’m talking about artists like Jay-Z, Nas, 50..etc.) but I still love their songs because of the sound...

i agree..if a tune is catchy and makes you wanna dance then so be it..the fact that it is mainstream and not underground doesnt make it less catchy or less danceable..i mean a tune like g-unit P.I.M.P is so catchy to me and always makes me wanna dance now whatever the they r rhyming about doesnt make a difference as long as i am havin a good time...if i want something deep ill go read poetry. |
