Check out this email from our support group today:
"It is strongly recommended that all staff discontinue the everyday use of Internet Explorer (IE). IE should only be used for development, testing purposes, Windows Updates or in certain special cases."
Grrr.. Ok, - so what should I be using: Firefox or registered Opera? |
Two questions:
1) What are they offering as an alternative?
2) What was the reasoning behind the email? |

1) Mozilla/Firefox/Opera i guess? but i agree its strange they didnt write that in the memo...
2) Security reasons probably... |

Cause they probably dont know anything about laws... Or actually, they do know something about antitrust laws! And they judged MS for breaking the laws, does that mean anything? Or you still know better? Or are anti trust laws anti capitalist too? If your answer is yes, oh well, then im anti capitalist.
B) Greater good must mean that it is better for society in whole? So what is the best for society, competition or no competition? |
Haven't you figured it out yet? Its one huge conspiracy by the left-wing.

1) I didn't post the full memo. The suggestion was Firefox or Opera (choice of the user).
2) The reason was the fact that too many "novice" users clicked "yes" on installing some f'ing ActiveX browserobject (spyware) which caused massive calamity and dataloss.
Funny - since installing XP SP2, I haven't even seen one of those things come up.
I'm going to stick with IE until the support group hunts me down... :disbelief |

I'm still at a loss to understand how this supports the assertion that MSN/IE/WMP are not free products.
Are you suggesting that a piece of software is not free unless it is cross-platform? And if that is what you're suggesting, precisely what platforms does it need to run on? Good luck getting licq, konqueror and xmms to run on Windows or a pre-OS-X Mac!
There are MILLIONS of programs available on download.com that are labelled as "free". Virtually none of them run on platforms other than Windows. There are MILLIONS more available on sites such as sourceforge.net and freshmeat.net, and shockingly enough, most of them won't run on platforms other than Linux!
And good luck trying to get old MAC software to run on ANY system! |

Please refer me to an applicable Act, Section, and Clause, otherwise I'm going to have to go out on a limb and say you're full of .
These decisions are notoriously based on flawed and biased interpretations of antiquated laws that were never meant to be applied to modern technology. Just look at the RIAA nonsense. |

This argument is completely out of place here. Authors of MILLIONS of programs available for free download from download.com did not get a penny from Windows sales.
Authors of MSN,IE etc got paid due to the sale of Windows. |

Dude you're all over the place. Don't change the subject.
The argument here was that MSN/WMP/IE are not free because they can only be run on Windows. THAT is the argument that's out of place here. |

I don't want to re-read all the posts.. But I'm sure the point that everyone was trying to make, is that MSN,IE,WMP are NOT free because you pay for them when you pay for Windows.
And if you DON'T pay for Windows(if you are using Linux for example), then MSN/IE simply don't exist for you, because you can't use them.
No matter how you look at it, MSN,IE,WMP are NOT free. |

THAT point was addressed ages ago, so maybe you should reread the posts.
Anybody can download MSN, IE, and WMP, free of charge, whether you own Windows or not.
The fact that they only run on Windows is not relevant. People create a fictional connection in their minds because Microsoft produces those programs, but MSN/IE/WMP are (as I just explained) only a handful of programs out of MILLIONS that you can download from the 'net, free of charge, but only run on Windows.
KDE and GNOME are bundled into Redhat Linux but RH Linux is free. Are you going to then say that KDE and GNOME are in fact not free, simply because they won't run on Windows or BSD?
Coincidentally, when it comes to MSN, the software is just a front-end to a network and there are numerous utilities on other platforms that can access that network. The software isn't really that important at all. On the other hand, guess who tries to BLOCK access to their network from all 3rd-party programs so people can ONLY use the proprietary client that runs on WINDOWS? You guessed it, AOL, Microsoft's direct competitor in that market! Who's being monopolistic now!?
Oh and just in case you'd forgotten:

I'm tired of this argument. You refuse to understand the difference between MSN and other free software NOT produced by Microsoft. When you pay for Windows, you pay for MSN - it's included with Windows.
The fact that you can download it for free means absolutely nothing, because you can't actualy use it unless you paid for Windows. This is different from other free software NOT produced by Microsoft, because those companies DID NOT get paid when you purchased Windows. How is that unclear ? |

Dude don't compare MSN to AOL. You have a choice between at least 5 different, yet reasonably equal internet prodivers here in the states. When you purchase an OS however; you have effectively only one choice - Windows, because 99% of Software only runs on Windows. |
