| When people degenerate their argument to nothing more than name-calling, without making valid counter-points. I use it as ammo in my own counter-argument. Pointing out that they are incapable of dealing with the issues being discussed and can only retaliate with personal attacks. Similar to a grade 6 in an argument at school. That usually puts them on the defensive and ruins their credibility... in short, it means you win. |

WOW. Nice responses guys. It's a grade 12 high school class. My girlfriend's studied a lot of law before, and most of the class are complete newbies. She had this great quote the other day... one of them said "Criminals shouldn't have representation" to which she promptly replied, "Well doesn't that defeat the entire purpose of a justice system?"
That just goes to show... a lot of her classmates are big-time boneheads. I'm not sure about the teacher... apparently she had a word with him, but I don't think any real resolution came from it. We'll see what comes of this. I imagine in a university setting (which is where she plans on going), people would be less ignorant, so I guess her idea is just to sidestep the bs for now and come back to it later when people are a bit more friendly.

| What she will deal with in the real world is far worse, so stick with the course, and not take it so seriously. It's just a debate, even if someone insults you, it's not a reason to give up but try harder. |

its grade 12, she'll live...and figuring its high school, expect to debate with many bone heads. She sounds like she has a head on her shoulders, so tell her that any bozo or retard that tries to make a legal argument by hurling insults or un-thought out statements will never get anywhere in law, and be laughed at almost any courtroom. |
