SM project - why can't this dream last
it starts with about a 1:30 of just a melody kind of strong with no beat

and it ends full blown with an anthem with no outro, just a 5 second fade out

I would mix it in twords the end of the breakdown of the prior record, then depending on the ending, i either may try to mix it or screw it and cut in something different or i may just do a simple fix-it backspin. (btw, i wouldn't know b/c i haven't listened to that track)

Sounds like a perfect 'one more tune' track... you know, when you're playing the last set, it's 5.50 am, you switch the decks off and everybody cheers and starts shouting for one track. Enough of an intro to let 'em know that something's happening and a nice short ending that finishes suddenly and lets everyone know the night is finally over. :D

I haven't listened to the track either - I'm sort of guessing from the description you've given. ;)

4 Options:

1. use it as the 1st track in the mix.

2. mix it in during break down of record 2.

3. mix it in during the outro of record 2 ( make sure the melody is in key) for example you have the beats of record 1 playing whilst the melody of record 2 is also playing.

4. if its a techy type of tune than a backspin and do a fade into the tune might work. if its more trancy than this will sound stupid and you have to mix it in.

Our friend Dave Piazza gives some good pointers.

I'm inclined to encourage you to challenge your DJ skills and see if you can't do option three properly (in key and in rythm) with an outgoing track. It can be done you just have to learn the rythm of the intro. One way of doing it is to match with the sections with drums in them and then go back to the intro.
A good DJ however should be able to feel the rythm even if there isn't one if you catch my drift.
Another thing to keep in mind is that if you need to make and adjustment to the tempo make it on the record that's playing out as if you do it on the incomming it will be really noticable.

You will probably find that there are other parts in that track that give you the option to mix in there too.

If you start using harmonics, tracks like this become a whole lot easier to work with as you can put them in all over the place. You could for example play one track and then substitute it's breakdown for this one etc... give people a bit of a mind . Keep in mind that if you are playing a track the people want to hear it's not good to mess around with it too much.

As for mixing other tracks into it.. well that should be easy enough.

pull an oakenfold and let the current track play out, then just start that one. then let it play out and start the next one.

Yeah, too bad oakenfold got too caught up in fame, im honestly not impressed anymore by his sets, and what he did to djs that opened for him. To me he's nothing more than a now. :)

what did he do to the dj's that opened?

if using CDJs, re-edit and re-arrange the track. that always can make things fun and interesting.

I heard he would do stuff like turn off the table and start his set way before the last dj's song was finished. I also heard he was a total and wasn't cool w/ people playing prior to him. (big ego problem) But i can't vouch on it b/c i never opened for him, but i do have a friend that knows someone who opened for oakie and totally was pissed about his attitude.

Anyways, imo there are plenty of better djs out there and oakie is not nearly as good as he was back in the early 90s.
