Well I don't know if I'll remember to collect my beer in 7 years, or if I'll even still be in this country, but you're on.

And deactivated cell phones in landfills don't count. They have to be active, serviced phones.

Bluetooth would just provide the interface with ATM network. A celluar network could do the same, as could any of the WiLAN standards, as could IR, a phone-coupler, etc.

The connection to the ATM network is least important part.

IMO - the most important aspect of this is the use of already used, standardized and relatively-secure technologies (SMS, ATM networks, etc).

But the whole reason behind bluetooth is for secure connections isn't it?
If I'm going to be zapping ANYTHING (standardized or not) , I sure as hell don't want my banking information caught in the air by some hacker (<-- I used that term lightly because not all hackers are bad)...

haha, im sure you are still on TA in 7 years =)

anyway, only phones that are currently on a plan counts. that way it will only be active phones.

Sounds good. I know I will lobby Mobility to pick it up - or sign up for test usage once it is beta'd (I've beta'd a number of new services for Mobility).

Good thinking on the open architecture aspect. The more it can do (with simple UI modifications) the more valuable it will be.

It will be awesome to have something like this available in Canada. I'm sick of my europe-mobile envy.. ;)

Keep us up to date - I can't wait to try it! :)

Didnt know that u do beta'd for Mobility. I migh start looking for somebody with practical knoweldge in this field, so RJ if you r interested just let me know.

Good guess! The cell phone business are depending on a 90% penetration within 5 to pay off their 2.5G/3G investments.

Personally, I think it will be hard to get a country of 27 million subscribers in a country of 30 million people.

Rogers has a limited test run of some long-range WAN-type setup using 3G technology - but doesn't expect to roll it out any time soon.

Remember 3G is defined as:

- 2.05 Mbits/second to stationary devices.
- 384 Kbits/second for slowly moving devices, such as a handset carried by a walking user.
- 128 Kbits/second for fast moving devices, such as handsets in moving vehicles.

Rogers has a test running for the fast moving devices. My understanding is that the test is being used to connect mobile users to a VPN, not as an actual direct IP connection.

Sign me up - let me know what you need me to do. I have access to a number of different devices as well (Blackberry, Treo, etc).

Cheers.
