Trance is a genre that once was a literal embodyment of its namesake, with long loopy melodies designed to induce daydreams in the head and movements in the feet. It succumbed however to the lure of the commercial and sold itself out as a one trick pony, with every tune parroting the same failsafe devices to drive crowds into either a frenzy of dancing if this didn't bother them or a frenzy of denying they ever liked trance/listening to prog instead/stroking their chins if it did.
It has the potential for the deepest brilliance but all to often opts for the shallows.

Cheese
One must understand the concept of 'cheese' to understanf Trance.
Cheesy tracks are designed to appeal to the masses with cheap effects, a lack of mucical integrity and often really embarrassing female vocals. The sort of songs that people like but 6 or 12 months later they won't admit to ever listening to, or buying for that matter.
For further information see artists like DJ Sammy and Scooter.
Trance is the Superior EDM Genre for Parties
Although the popularity of Trance has been volatile in recent years you will find that the majority of the TOP10 DJs in the world have their roots in Trance and form an integral part of their sets when they travel the world.
For getting the crowd to dance and the atmosphere to be electric there is no better music.
The Music They Play in Heaven
Just to see if you are still reading, Trance has been verified by scientists to tbe music played in heaven, and this is little suprise to Trance fans.

Oh off trancecracker. You're neither contributing to the thread or offering anything other than personal bias, and a pretty personal bias at that. |

Actually, System-J is right, even though he's not exclaiming it in a very nice way.
Stating things officially as "The Best" isn't a very good approach, unless you're just casually alluding to something as your personal "best" or "favorite". We have to take into account the subjectivity involved in things like music and artists.
He should use terms more like "Popular" or "Great" and "Famous". |

| No he's right. Many many scientists have said that Trance is the only music they listen to in Heaven. In fact, i'm a scientist myself. So believe me when I tell you, Trance is even the music God listens to when he's taking a 20 minute super dump on the can, sometimes known to us as a "meteor shower" or "what happens when tobias thinks". |

The best way to get into the scene is to listen to as much and as many different genres of music (electronic and none) as possible. Noobs should browse the "What are you listening to" threads and try to "come accross" some of those tracks/sets listed. WWW.DJMixes2k.com is a good source for free bittorrent good trance sets.
There are also MANY good internet radio stations that ONLY play edm (electronic dance music) so here is a short list (with links) of those:
90 FM
Radio 1 (More here than you could ever listen to)
1Club.FM (channel for each genre)
ETN.FM (a personal favorite)
Proton Radio
Pulse Radio
Music 1
After Hours DJs (More amatures but still very worth checking out)
just click a link to one of the stations and then there should be a link on the page that comes up for a radio feed that uses either Real Player or Windows Media Player or sometimes both. Searching either of those players on google will lead you to a free download of the player if you don't happen to have it.
And lastly...browse the forums, all the ones you can read ;). Although there is a wealth of stupid crap that people post, there are also many excellent discussions of music, termanology, shows, producing, artists, and anything else you could possibly be interested in. You just have to filter through the junk to find it.
good luck |

This isnt so much beginers advice on trance, but beginer's advice for tranceaddict:
We all snap at each other, alot of times we state our opinions as facts, we flare up in huge arguments over things that from the outside seem very pointless, but dont let this fool you.
We post the way we do because it is fun, if we were all to show up at the same party one day we wouldnt start fighting each other like it might seem, there is a strong difference between the way we act as message board posters and the way we act as real people.
As far as trance goes, you'd be suprised where you might find it, some kids have lived in places for years completely oblivous to the music that is around them. When you read a message board and see pictures of kids partying in far off lands dont let this convince you that good dancing doesnt exist near you. Often a decent party is only a couple hours of driving away, and local DJ's often are just as capable of rocking a dance floor as the biggest superstar DJ's. Try and search for communities of EDM fans near you, and if you find a great piece of music that is only known in your region, share it!
Here is another:
Not all DJ's that are refered to as 'trance DJ's' play exclusively trance music in their sets. Actually, most of them play tunes picked from many genres, although the overall vibe of them is usualy trancey. One example of this could be Paul van Dyk, who has never actually admitted to being a trance DJ. He insists that he plays 'electronic music' and only classifies it into 2 categories "good music", and "bad music". If you are looking for good tunes, dont be afraid to look outside the trance category, some of the mose succesful 'trance djs' are doing the same thing!
I hope this was helpful, I would like to hear recomendations from the people who are putting each other down
Im quite surprised at your sudden reversal of behavior system-J. You used to seem like you defended alot of those very same artist that you bitched that guy out for, I think that situation could have been handled differently, not that it really matters though. |
