I knew it!!! For a while after I got the shot, it always felt like someone was watching over me.... I guess it stopped working because it doesn't feel that way anymore.
:stongue:
Or maybe I've just gotten SO used to it... :conf: |

| Well I remember a few years ago I got the flu shot...That year I didn't get the flu but MAN I must have had several bad strep throat infections through the winter:( .I've also heard that if you take it too many times then you can compromize you immune system AND that part of the ingredient in the flu shot is mercury:nervous: ....i dunno... |

| I'm quite happy with the auto-immune system I was blessed with, thank you :) |

I agree with the naysayers...
unless you're particularly at risk (weak immune system, ashtma, elderly) or have a lot of contact with at risk groups...fuk it.
if people spent more time concentrating on being healthy (eating well, exercise, adequate sleep, etc) we wouldn't be needing to artificially boost our natural defenses against flu strains and other ailments. Pretty much the only time I might get sick is after several consecutive nights of poor sleep (like from partying all weekend long, lol).
they're getting better at it...but the flu shot is only good against specific strain(s) which officials have to predict ahead of time will be the prevalent strains here this season. Getting a flu shot doesn't mean you won't get one of the many many other strains that exist too...just that you won't get the one that they think will be the most prevalent here.
I wonder how much money we piss away on these shots that are unecessary for sooo many of the people who get them...theoretically the costs are offset by many people not getting sick and going to the doctor, missing work, etc...but I dunno. |

As someone who works in health care, I totally agree with your post. Theoretically, the cost of providing tax-paid flu shots (remember folks, nothing is free;) ), it should offset the cost of treating people who get sick with the flu. I'm not sure if there's any data to support that 100%, but it makes sense.
Although you're right MarkT, about being a healthy young adult and not being necessary to get the flu shot, I would say that you should bear in mind whether or not you live with or spend a lot of time around people in the vulnerable population (ie. the very young and the elderly). Even if you don't come down with a full-blown flu sickness, if you don't get the shot you are much more likely to carry the bug and give it to someone who is vulnerable. Every year thousands of elderly and immunocomprimised die from the flu, and the more people that prevent themselves from transmitting the virus could prevent many deaths. |

Just looked on statscanada, apparently the death rate from July 1 2003 of one year to June 30 of 2004 was 87,296. Obviously that was probably people mostly 85 yrs and older who were bound to die pretty soon anyway...but aww, those poor old grannies  :sadgreen: :sadgreen:
It also puts things like Sars and Westnile into perspective...I mean, with all the media coverage given to westnile, I don't know if one person died this year from it.
Edit: Those stats are for Ontario alone. |

I believe there were a couple fatalities linked to West Nile this year in Ontario.
