here's a thing the federal govt could do with his surplus...

build a high speed train between the Quebec-Windsor corridor, connecting Montreal Ottawa and Toronto at 300 kmh.

expected cost: anywhere between 15 to 20 billions. they already got 8 after 4 months of accounting in 2004.

If you think paying back what you owe is stupid I'd really hate to see your personal books!

Retiring debt is not, economically speaking, always the best use of surpluses. In many cases, there is greater economic gain from re-investing surpluses into improvements in infrastructure. The benefits of retiring debt need to be carefully weighed against other uses for the surplus - it's not a slam dunk decision.

Recently, a bunch of foreign dignitaries replied to a canadian politician saying "sure you have a surplus, we've been paying all your bills".

well, still better than the US. They have a huge deficit and still the rest of the world pay their bills.

dude, a country is built with debts... I am not gonna give you a course on that online, do your own researches.

Do you think Canada had the money readly availble when it built the transcanadian railway?

How about the major projects all around the country, nope.

The govt gets a loan and then expects to get it back by the increased productivity with the let say new railway or airport.

And when they get it back they pay it off. Oh i know what the theorists say but the only people who benefit in the long run are the banks and investors. You know, those evil villains that left wing deficit driving people love to hate.

ok..that is a generalization that isnt always true. Look at alberta. NO PST, and NO DEBT!

The debt decreases by itself every year with something called inflation. As long as Canada pays its intrests, it's in good shape. Paying down the capital is simply stupid and irresponsible.

Are you actually serious?

Wanna take a wild guess just how much the interest on the debt is costing taxpayers? If we eliminated that debt, we could easily have a third of our taxes disappear.

The worst part is, almost all of the debt is owned BY CANADIANS, so there's no to blame here but 30 years of Canadian spendthrift government policies (I'd blame the Liberals, but it's really the NDP's fault more than anyone's).

They have a huge deficit because lobbyists are trying to socialize the country. Their debt is domestic, not foreign. The USA has forgiven massive debts from almost every single country worth mentioning, including many in Europe. The "rest of the world" certainly does NOT "pay their bills."

Think of how much money the USA wastes on the U.N. alone. It gives billions every year to an entity that denigrates it constantly, supports enemy nations, and essentially opposes it on every important decision. If anything, it is the USA that is paying most of the world's bills, THAT is the reason why there's a deficit!

You seem to be forgetting resource excise taxation.

No it because they have tax cuts at the same time as they increase government spending (national security) and start a war.

a fair share of US's debt is foreign, most of it asian.

US has forgiven debt for every country worth mentioning? huh? source.

US has a large trade deficit too, which is paid by foreign nations.

Well per capita there is a lot of other countries that pay a lot more to the UN than the US does.
