No, i'm not calling the people who vote early stupid. They're taking advantage of an opportunity to vote, which is great. I'm saying that the government allowing it is stupid. |

Granted... but as a political science major I beg to differ that at the time when our founding fathers made the rules it was also a time when the men wore wigs and ing tights.... |
What does what they wore have to do with anything??? We have the longest standing democracy in history, they obviously did something right.

hence the fact that early voting just as anything else that is also different from those times should be embraced as an evolved way of American civic engagement... |
while that thought is incredibly segmented, i think i understand it this way and correct me if i'm wrong. Since early voting is innovative, we should just be ok with it??? I think it has some very clear problems that require more thought than "oh great, more time to vote always means more democracy"

this will be the most important election of our lives better make it right....Early voting or not in the end....VOTE JOHN KERRY.... A better America...RzO |
I'm voting for Micheal Badnarik, the Libertarian candidate for president. If you're a swing voter out there who doesn't like Bush or Kerry, you're most likely going to fall into the Libertarian camp. Libertarians are not a crazy 3rd party like the Greens or the Socialists, they're a legitimate party with elected officials already in office throughout the country.
Basically, libertarian = conservative socially and economically. Where as republican = social conservative, economic liberal and Democrat = social liberal, economic conservative. (conservative here refers to the amount of government intervention) |

The government is doing something which I feel is deteriorating our election system. THE GOVERNMENT is the problem. The people are not.

that comment lost you all credibility with me, this is not a flamewar, this is a debate. |

That implies that you're smarter than everyone in all of academia, and i'm willing to bet this is far from the case. |

No man... i am just stating a point that is favored by many at this time...you don't have to believe it. I dunno maybe over hear at UF I don't get the proper info....anyway the point is that your way makes good sense but our country is a two party system based on a majority partisan advantage....Libertarian theory sounds good but not happening in America....just the facts |

Favered by many huh? I don't see one person who's backing you up on this thread, where i do have some people who have agreed with me. Based on that, you're wrong on that point.

And this country started with a bipartisan setup between the Republicans (now democrats) and the Whigs (who fell apart). Clearly, things do change. And Libertarians already hold public office all over the country, so things are changing. Just the facts. And if libertarian theory "sounds good" to you, you should vote that way. The system CAN, and DOES elect third party candidates, we've just got such a messy media system that they NEVER get any press (except Nader...) for Federal elections. And that rant would start a whole new thread! |

you can say that...i don't really wan't to keep arguing b/c as you know with politics it won't stop...i just think in an election like this voting for the Lib. candidate is taking away from Kerry...not that u would even want him to win anyway, i dont know....but my point again is that people need to vote and your bull about it being inconvient and for the elites was right.....in the late 18th century....not today....so vote however you want but don't bitch if G.W. wins... |

When did I say that voting should only be for elites??? Tell me and I'll take you seriously. |

on this voter fraud note: the increase of absentee balots and early voters does increase the chances of voter fraud. The Orlando Sentinal ran an article an the front page earlier this week on this very subject. they reported that there really is not system to track if a vote is cast more than once through different systems (i.e. adsentee balots and early voting). and if we all remember the 2000 election when bush won because of the "hanging chad" conspiracy, absentee balots did play a part in that.
about 2 weeks ago i was aproached on the street by a couple of guys signing people up for absentee balots. my obvious question was "why shoudl i do an absentee balot?"
"well its more convenient because you dont have to take time out of your work day to go to the polls"
so i signed up and the next day got a call from the Bush Campain Headquarters in jacksonville and it tures out that the guys on the street were HIRED to sign people up for these balots. now i dont trust republicans to begin with and when i remembered the 2000 election i promptly told the guy on the other end of the phone to not send me the balot. im not trying to sound like a conspiracy theorist or anything but we need to keep an eye on the sketchy dealings of the republican party.
i dont know who im voting for yet, but i know 3 things:
1. i am DEFINITLY not voting for Bush
2. Kerry is too much of an idot to be president
3. I will vote
so as you can conclude i will be voting for one of the underdogs who has no chance of getting elected, and i do not feel like i am wasting my vote. my hope is more and more people will vote and not for either republican or democrat, and maybe a few years from now we will have a real choice instead of two idots and we have to choose the lesser of two evils. |

I'll have to say that I totally disagree with early voting. Before you rail me, here's why:
1) The Founding Fathers made election day a Tuesday for a reason. They wanted election day to be INCONVENIENT. That means you have to go out of your way to vote. This keeps morons and people who care more about their jobs away from the polls,
Not exactly quoted but the general idea....stupid people might vote but they live here too....oh and they also vote democrat...woo |
