not at all. Someone said that the cd wasnt all that, and you said he didnt know what he was talking about. He was giving his opinion, and frankly, with your fave dj listed as Armin van Buuren, I dont think you are in a position to be making those type of comments.
He can say what he likes, and hes backed it up too. Something that you can not do. | :haha:
So what do you have against armin? |

Art of Trance - Kaleidoscope

I checked this track out based on a previous recommendation by you... and I thought it sucked hardcore, sounded like something I could've knocked out on fruityloops in a day back when I first started using it. I'm not much of a fan of ASOT/Anjuna trance at all but would take it over that I'm afraid.
Not saying all old trance sucks, but that tune... horrid example :nervous:
I'll check out those other recs sometime |

The thing about tranceport is, it's nothing more than a collection of the biggest tracks of the day. Everyone hails it, and Oakenfold, like it was the pinnacle of EDM. In reality, it's just a compilation CD that was loosely mixed in ProTools. It's no different than one of those "Clubbers Guide to Ibiza 200x" or Ministry of Sound CDs that come out every year, helping to remind us all of the big tunes we were blasting the previous summer.
That doesn't mean that some of the songs on there aren't good. As a compilation CD, it's not that bad. As a mix CD, it's terrible. The songs carry themselves - each track feels separated from the next. There's no flow at all In a good mix CD, the songs will fit together as if they were made to do so. The whole mix will sound like one giant song - and that's exactly what Tranceport does not do, or even comes close to doing.
My first introduction to EDM was tranceport, when I borrowed a burned CD from a friend with some programs on it, that also happened to have Tranceport. I had heard him playing EDM before and thought it was cool, so I decided to check it (tranceport) out. The first track I put on was Words, and it blew me away. I had no idea that music like that existed. Other tracks I thought were cool, and others I found boring, but that's not the point here.
I was a complete electronica noob. I had no idea how it was made, or performed. I had no idea that DJs were anything more than voices on the radio or guys who did scratching. And I thought Tranceport was an artist album, with individual tracks. It took me a week or two of listening to it before I realized that the beginning and ends of the tracks sounded sorta similar, and managed to figure out the order. Even then, all I did was keep playing Rendenvous, Purple and Words. I'd listen to the individual tracks then be on my way.
Shortly after that, I began to raid my friends FTP for all the electronica he had. One of the first things I got was the Best of Platipus 2x mix CD. I'm listening to it now as I type this. It was the first time I was ever able to just sit back and listen, and get lost in the music. It sounded to me like one giant song, which is pretty much what it was. And remember, I was a compete noob back then, but I still saw the difference instantly.
This is how a mix CD is supposed to sound. This how trance is supposed to sound. It's supposed to be entrancing. A few of the tracks on Tranceport were entrancing, but most weren't. And thats why it's overrated. |

If it could be knocked out in a day in fruityloops, then how come it still sounds so much better than 99% of trance music that is produced today? And how come copycat tracks aren't a dime a dozen?
And why is simplicity to be looked down upon? Is there some sort of elitist snob thing going on, where a complicated song full of effects and washes and other tricks is immediately more interesting than one without them? They didn't have fancy software packages and other back when Kaleidoscope was made. This is pure and simple music. And it still sounds way, way, way more interesting than stuff produced today.
If you want a better example, get Red Herring. It's made by the same guy (with a partner under that moniker). Listen to how complex it sounds, then compare it with one of the dime a dozen trance tracks coming out today. Red Herring is TEN years old. |
