You guys have a lot of misconceptions of Christianity. As a Christian, drinking is ok, drunkeness is not (not to say that I don't get drunk, but it's not something God likes).

Christians that don't indulge in these things, do so by choice, not guilt. The whole point of christianity is that we all mess up and are forgiven, if we ask.

I will agree that some Christian meetings can be really weird, and, sometimes, cultish, but that's not always the case. I have a lot of other Christian friends that drink, but they don't try to get trashed. I feel the same dilemna with Christian girls though. I wish I could find one that I could vibe with, but they just seem so different and naive. I respect your guys opinions, but you are generalizing.

hey, at least you seem to get what we are saying about the wierdness :thepirate But how do you not expect someone to generalize if they goto one event and have a bad impression from what happens there.

That's the point at which religion ceases to be merely poor judgment and becomes mental illness.

anybody can make themselves believe anything if they want to hard enough. and thats the way with many people who are religious... the fact they allow themselves to be fully consumed by something like this only signals their yearn to belong, to be accepted, to believe in something and look forward to something, ... but does not mean they are mentally ill.

When an individual chooses - for whatever reasons - to abandon their senses and their reason and base their lives on non-sense and non-reason, then they are no longer operating within the range of functionally sane human behavior.

too bad this isnt included in any serious definition of sanity :o
wow, imagine a world where all religious people are institutionalized, that would work SO much better then what we got going here

Any "serious" definition of sanity will tell you that it's a purely legal term with no medical or psychological significance. So what?

I had a similarly horrifying experience once...

I went to school with a girl who's father was the Pastor of a non-denominational church. Her and I were friends and she asked me to come to a service one night, normally I would have politely declined, but they had some special guest speaker and she had convinced a few of our other friends to go and it seemed really important to her, so I went.

K so there I was and this guy was preachin about some I don't know it was all really foreign to me and I felt pretty uncomfortable and my mind kept wandering as he was speakin about the wrath of god or whatever I was like in my head "omg my nails look like crap i really need a manicure... i wish i had a drink right now, I wonder when that new PVD is comin out..." then suddenly I snapped back to reality when this man starts speaking this crazy gibberish he is yelling in some weird language I have never heard (I think religious zealots refer to this phenomena as "speaking in tongue") I was like WTF:conf:

NEXT thing I know all of the people in the small congregation start going up to the front one by one and this man put his hand on their forehead and yelled "FIRE" and then they would fall on the ground like they passed out and just lay there with their eyes closed. I was paralyzed there in my seat watching the people around me go up one by one ...until it was just me and one other lady left and she came over to where I was sitting and started telling me how I need to accept Jesus into my life...:nervous: I was really frightened by this and the man was looking at me...staring:nervous: it was just awful.

:sadgreen: Then I just got up and left, drove myself home...my friend tried to ask me what happened the next day but I told her I didn't want to talk about it.:conf:

I think I might be scarred for life:confused:

Religion is not a bad thing and a lot of the underlying characteristics make sense.

Imagine the scene several thousand years ago where you had effectively a bunch of savages who had no control or guiding. To help people feel a sense of unity, trust, faith and maintain some order you create values and morals. If you can unite people through these values and morals then life can be made a lot easier and civilised for everyone.

It has got a little out of hand though.....and I just explained that very badly.

I would have gone up and let him put his hand on my forehead. Then when he yelled "FIRE", I would have just stood there. And point at him. And say, "Ha, ha, it didn't work!" :haha:
