New US Law

I learnt from bitter experience* yesterday that a new law in the USA came into effect 26 October 2004. This requires all visitors to have machine-readable passports by law. Most Canadian passports will be, but some passports from other countries and ones issued a few years ago in developing countries may not be machine-readable. Maybe you could put a notice on the intranet about this to warn people to check now and if necessary get a new passport before attempting to travel to the USA?

Cheers

What next are those idiots gonna come up with next??

Serious man. What are they going to do if there's a cancellation on a flight if the customs officer writes that down? (not accept it? Psht)They did that to me when I left overseas to come back over here so the officer just looked at the passport said "ok fine move along" and that's that.

Whoever you quoted said "learnt" and asked for it to be posted on the "intranet," and you believe it? Why don't ya do a little research first?

Don't ya think if that there was such a new law that severly restricted travel there would've been bigger news headlines than a misspelled "email forward?"

How pathetic, US really irritates me.

ray and i learned this weekend that there should never be any stress getting over the border to the US. they didn't even check for any sort of ID (ray doesn't have any ID so we were stressed) going there and coming back.

True but that could be luck of the draw on who you get as your border guard too...

I've had some real doozies...

Always have your passport. SP was just lucky. And yes this law is real. Im certain that within a few years Canadians will always need a passport to get into the US (and not just birth certificate as is needed now)

Im also convinced that our status as being the ONLY country whose citizens do not need a visa to go to the US will change.

well i heard less doozies than stories like mine. even when we drove to new york there was 4 of us in the car, and not one person got IDed both ways, and we were cracked on the way back. i would never fly without a passport but driving, chances are, you will get a few questions and get let through.

lol nahh its cuzz of your skin tone my dear!

i've been strip searched at the border, finger printed, interrogated, had my passport taken from me for 5 hours while they checked my background. I've missed flights in the past becuase of this. That is why i've boycotted the states and refuse to go. I haven't stepped over the border since my last ordeal in 2002.
