My Lolo (tagalog for grandfather) fought in WWII, in the pacific islands. I don't really know much after that.

A few of my relatives fought in the Italian army. A couple of them died; one of them was in a POW camp.

My grandfather faught in Poland in the WWII. He's always telling us stories of what he remembers.

Wow, It's not often someone would talk open about it. It isn't something easy to talk about.

My Grandpa fought in WW2. He was in the 2nd Armored. Came in later on D-Day to bring the tanks in, fought in the Battle of the Bulge too. He never talked about it, not even with his wife, my Grandma when he came home.

Yeah i know what you mean. All i know is my Grandfather was in WWII and I think fought in the Pacific.. but thats all i know.

He doesnt talk about it to anyone and he doesn't want to. Its a shame because i really would like to know what happened or what he did, but its ultimately his choice not to say anything.

and why did you quote yourself?

I know what you mean. My grandfather was okay talking about the resistance but he never wanted to tell us about the concentration camps. All i know is that he opened Buchenvaal (or something like that, not sure about the spelling), and helped evacuate Auschwitz.

My grandfater (on my fathers side) fought the russians in the Finnish winter war. He was the last one to retreat, because he was the one blowing up the bridges and .

He didn't talk about it for 50 years.

Didnt really fight in the war as such, but...

My grandma + Her mum were spies for the russians before the revolution, and had to run away from the communists to Manchuria.

My grandpa saw his house get bombed (with his family in it) and spend something like 3 years running from the army when he was 12 years old. He hung below a train for a few 100km (when he was 13). Then got caught and put into a german detention centre or something, but he was so cool the germans looked after him and his mates, gave them extra food and clothes and stuff. They made a break for it and eventually all ended up in South Australia. Strong kids, i sure as hell couldnt do that even now let alone when I was 14. I've met most of them, theyre really good people. Especially the youngest of the group, Michael, he's nuts! He would have been 10 or 12 at the time :O

When my grandpa got here, him and all his friends tried to help get more people out of russia. Then my grandpa got my grandma into the country, and a few years later they got married. They had a small house and had lots of new immigrants staying there all the time when my mum was growing up.

Pretty amazing life stories

My grandfather was the colonel of a segregated US Army regiment that occupied concentration camps after they were liberated. He died when I was like 6 so I never got the chance to talk to him about the personal experiences of it or whatever, but he was given the SS flag of the camp by the commander of the other regiment as a gift, but a German POW broke out of his cell and stole it from his office. He eventually got it back and they put the prisoner back in detention. [/story]

My grandfather was about 15 when the Germans were taking over Poland in '39...I've heard stories from him about how he survived. Incredible stuff. I love having beers with my grandfather and listening to his stories...it's amazing how someone can remember so much, but I guess if I lived through those times, I'd remember those days perfectly too.

It's sad how in these days war is just a lame excuse for some politicians greed (and I'm not referring to the States only).

Back then...those people, they truly were hero's. It's amazing how so many of us take our lives for granted without realizing how different these times could've been if it wasn't for our great-grandfathers, and grand-fathers.

One grandfather was in the Marines in WWII, the other in the Navy.

Pops was in Sonar and a Gunner in the Coast Guard...Did one tour in Vietnam on a Cutter chasing around and sinking fishing boats that carried munitions for the VC the other 3+ years he spent mostly in the North Sea on station...uhg...
