Theory: Trance is best the year you first discovered livesets

Thought of this the other day. I got on the university connection and grabbed loads of livesets in 2002. And I think that was the best year overall that Trance has had. The bulk of the stuff in 2004 is gash IMO, aside from the stuff from my favourite DJ's and producers. But back then, everything seemed better.
What do you think?? What year did you first discover livesets, and do you think that was the best year for trance?? |

Discovered livesets: 2001
Best year for trance: 1993
After taking a step back and looking at trance as a whole. So to answer your question, no, my judgement isn't based on my biased experience. |

Heh. I still do, if only to get a rough feel of what a jock who i've never heard before plays. Then to the recycle bin she goes. |

Actually, that was a bit of a lie. I do listen to the occasional liveset but those are mostly amateur DJ mixes downloaded from here. |

| I don't listen to livesets. I got into trance at the start of 2002, and that may have something to do with me thinking 2001 was on par with 1999 as trance's strongest year. |

Me too man. I'm just a big fat liar. I actually have a set of classic trance saved from the discogs amateur mix forums, but only because they're so rare. I love you man. |

| whatever year it was when trance nation came out, 99 I think. When Gatecrasher was at its height and just before trance went into the clubbing mainstrem. Awsome time. |

I agree 2002 was awesome -- was also the first year that I discovered livesets.
2003 was also awesome too.
And I totally agree with you on 2004. Everything has gone too progressive for my tastes. Leans way too far towards House.
To me Progressive Trance should sound like what Active Sight has been doing with tracks like "Out of Our Lives", and "The Search For Freedom." It's experimental and forward thinking -- but you can still tell it's Trance.
Where has all the melodic uplifting trance gone? Seems like no one plays it anymore. I hope it comes back.
Lately I've been listening to alot of older sets from 2002, 2003 -- I miss it. |

| except for a number of compilations i've had since 98 or so, very seldom listen to livesets...although i'd imagine i'd relish Trance most from the 90s to 2001 or thereabouts. tho i agree with the_Chris that contemporary Trance was, is i should say, rather abominable save for those productions from some of my favs. likewise |
